About the gas right after surgery...I've heard it is quite painful. I've also heard "to walk it off". What about walking makes the pain go away?

Also, does it just 'come out'? As a toot, or as air?

In other words, will I be farting up and down the hall?:o

Yes and burping. And it feels great when it comes out. Use gas x strips abd have someone pat your back a bit hard and if you alone put you hands in the air and do a slow wave o wiggle.

The gas was the only pain I had post op. Baby gas drops work great for that. Moving around as much as possible really helps too. They pump you full of air when they do the surgery too, so you feel really bloated. Just eat very slowly and use the gas drops when you feel the gas coming on and start moving about. That is what helped me the most.

The gas was pretty bad for me. Im still having issues one week post op. The first few days the gas did not come out which was really painfull but walking helped. It started to pass on day 4. Now I get servier sharp pains in my stomach every once in a while that last for a second or two. The gas ex strips dont help it much but Im sure eventually it will go away.

Don't be surprised if you have shoulder pain. I was having severe pain in my right shoulder from the gas. A heating pad helps tremendously!

Ok. I'm scared of this gas pain. I am very limited as far as walking is concerned,, so I'm thinking that 'walking the gas out' might not work for me. But I'll try.

1.When you're in the hospital, walking or not, do you toot?

2.Do you have to push the gas out?

3.Won't that hurt your stomach and/or incisions?

4. I've tried gas-s strips in the past, to no avail. Can I take the anti-gas pill I take now?

I had surgery on the 22nd Of March 2015 and I didn't have any problems with gas at all. Approx 6 hrs after surgery I was walking around, not to far though I was walking with no pain of gas what so ever. Have a beautiful day. Prada.

I'm happy I found this blog, I am 4 days post-op and I also finally released my first bouts of gas today. My pain is so much in my center to left side, almost where my heart and left lung is, but it's been feeling good to release it whether it's through the attic or the basement, lol! I've also been dealing with terrible heart burn.... But I guess that's what I signed up for... I'm just curious as to when the rough stuff subsides and the enjoyment begins?

And does anybody have any suggestions on what I should get to help with the gas? Since so many people are saying gas-X really isn't helpful...

If you are referring to post-op gas from what they pumped into your abdomen, it is free floating gas that for me always causes shoulder pain. The only way I could get relief was to walk as much as possible & walk some more.

Gas-X strips helped with the "musical" bowel gas.

While I was in the hospital the nurse would give me something for the gas and it would go away. There a few times I tried to avoid the med and just walk it out, but that didn't help me what so ever. Finally yesterday when I was waiting to be discharged I asked the nurse what meds she was giving me for the gas and she showed me it was Infants Gas Relief drops. I was like no way. So I mentioned I would have my husband stop and get me some. So why did my nurse tell me that they are suppose to throw your meds away after just one dose. I was like WTH! She said that she didn't see the problem in giving me the Gasx as long as I didn't tell anyone. I know there were at least 4 times that I was given this med, so 3 of those bottles with stuff still in them hit the trash. And it's a 1oz bottle and I only take 0.6ml of it. That made me so mad that either our insurance companies or ourselves are paying for the hospital stay and they don't even give us the option of keeping any unused meds. Just bad!

I had my SO rub my shoulders once I got home. I was not able to get much of my gas out until I got home, so I was rather uncomfortable. Walking did help, but the light massage was the best. Best of luck!

My hubby calles it 'chernobul' as in the nucleor (sorry about the spelling), lol.

22 months out and STILL have bad gas. I blamed it on our kitty's until one day I had a really bad "release" and I felt so guilty I fest up. My hubby just looked at me and laughed. "that's YOU" , lol

I got use to running to the bathroom cause you never knew if it was air or something else, lol.

I actually had about 3 accidents in the night since the surgery. Embarresing but what can you do.

I keep Fabris (the clothing and air freshener) handy.

Now that winter i over I can now open a window, lol

I most burp but I'm less than 2 weeks post op and I don't eat very much right now. I do pass gas after eating and after drinking Protein. It's a relief to feel and it's natural. I find gas-x strips to be helpful but if that's not working for you there are other makers of anti-gas products. Just make sure whatever you get is a chewable or strip or liquid because once you've had surgery you're not going to absorb a pill or capsule the same way. You also don't want it to get stuck.

And walking around helps because it boosts the circulation. Plus if you walk outside and have to fart it's gonna blow away in the wind LOL so long as nobody's behind you it'll be fine.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
