three weeks out & so sick

Recommended Posts

I'm really hoping someone out there can help. I'm just over three weeks out, started on pureed food a week ago. At first I had no problems in fact so far the entire process has gone very smoothly however, in the last few days I've been hit by chronic exhaustion and nausea and am having problems eating anything at all. I manage a scrambled egg for Breakfast although today I couldn't even eat that and the last couple days haven't been able to stomach lunch or dinner the only thing I can tolerate is lemonade iceblocks as I'm having trouble even tolerating Water. I've tried to find a Protein Drink I can tolerate but so far I cant find one that I like. I know that not eating is making the exhaustion worse. Wondering if anyone else has had a similar issue and also any ideas on some foods I can try that might be easy on the stomach. Really appreciate anyones help and advice. Thanks guys

Dehydration can lead to exhaustion and nausea. Are you getting in your required fluids? If I had to guess, based on your post, I would guess no. If that is true, really work on that -- consider it your full-time job. Try just about anything relatively low cal and healthy - Decaf tea (hot and cold), warm broth, sugar free popsicles, light fruit juice, etc. And check in with your surgeon -- IMO your eating and drinking should be getting easier, not harder, and your surgeon probably wants to help if things are getting worse for you. Good luck!

Im also a month out and I know I've been constantly dehydrated. It's just something you've got to work on but if you stop urinating at least 3 times a day call your surgeons office because you'll need fluid! And continuing eating iceblocks (im assuming you're Australian?) because ice pops count as fluid! I've been eating a lot of soft cheeses. Im not sure if you have baby bell or laughing cow cheese but perhaps you can google them and find something similar? I've also been doing low fat string cheese.

It's hard because you have to wait in between eating and drinking. I've been on puréed since leaving the hospital...calling ice pops iceblocks was the giveaway for being Australian lol! Good luck and honestly try to focus more on Fluid and drink Protein Drinks they also count as fluid. :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
