wait time on aproval from insurance co.

Recommended Posts

Good morning ladies and gents. I'm not sure if this question has already been asked or addressed, but here goes. I live in NJ and have Horizon Blue Cross and Blue Shield, about how long does it take for them to approve surgery once they get all the stuff they need from the doctor? I have a wedding coming up in early June and i am in it so i want to plan accordingly. My last appointment is on April 28, so lets say my surgen has all letters of clearance from all doctors by May 1. How much longer on average will it be, i know each state and insurance co. is differant. If i could just some kind of idea that would be great, thank you in advance.

Anywhere from a couple of days to a couple of weeks are the ranges I've heard. It will depend heavily on how backlogged the insurance company is and if all your surgeon's office has all their ducks in a row.

Don't be afraid to give your insurance a call every day and check on the status.

You insurance will give you a certain number of months to have the surgery if you're approved....like a six-month range (or at least my insurance was). So you can certainly plan the surgery around the wedding, assuming your surgeon has availability. My surgeon was booked for several months. :(

Best of luck on your approval!

My approval process took over a year & I was denied twice-they had to keep resubmitting (They didn't understand the denials) I was approved the third time.

I did my last required class on March 20 and received my letter on April 3, 2015. I haven't seen the surgeon yet to schedule my surgery. I have some personal things I need to get a hold of before I set up the apt because I was told I have 30 days from seeing surgeon to have the surgery.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
