Biliopancreatic Diversion with Duodenal Switch (BPD-DS)

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

I had my first consult today and I must say I love my doctor already (Dr. Medvetz of LMA in south Jersey)! She was really nice, extremely honest and knowledgeable! We spoke about my age (30), goal weight, diabetes, pcos, and plans to have children! With all things considered she recommends the sleeve with BPD-DS. Most likely my surgery won't be until June but I was just wondering if anyone had this type of WLS and if so you are happy with the results? Any struggles specific to the BPD-DS?

I had something as you described done in June. I have lost 81 pounds. I had a stomach stapling in 1980....I only lost 11 pounds. The staple line came lose and therefore I had two stomachs. The doctor said that was why I was unable to lose weight all of these years. The Dr told me he recommended a combination (some call it a modified DS). Because of my stomach problems they were unable to form a sleeve and just made a small pouch. I haven't had any problems except when I eat too fast or don't chew good enough. You will need lots of Protein and be on Vitamins for the rest of your life. So far my labs have been good......just my thyroid is like it is on a roller coaster....still trying to level it out. I feel I am a slow loser compared to others on this board.....but I am older and probably don't do as much exercising. Losing slow is ok.....they say you are more often to keep it off. I have gone down three...almost four sizes.

I'm glad that you have had a positive experience! The doctor had me a little nervous because she was saying how complicated the surgery and of course the more complex the surgery is, the more likely complications could arise! But she's confident, she looked at me and we chatted for a bit and she said I know exactly what I want to do for you! You are young and you have your whole life ahead of you, this is the best option! I trust her, I researched her prior to the meeting! So hopefully in a few months I'll have positive results also!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
