My father put it best. Why wouldn't you be upset? You shot your best friend...Who knew that food was my best friend and companion? I didn't until I couldn't turn to it anymore. It is hard! But, as others have said, one day at a time. You WILL get through this. Hugs!

I totally understand how tough it can be when we have a depression diagnosis--I have suffered with major depression for years. I know (for me anyhow) sometimes I get so wrapped up in "trying" so hard (to be positive, to eat right, to control cravings, etc etc etc) but like the Nike commercial--sometimes the more I "just do it" the more freeing it feels.

One foot in front of the other, one day at a time. Be good to yourself. . .

I feel so down most of the time and I always believed it's cause of my size but I am thinking now it mayb just one small part of one bigger issue! i hate to ask this but I'm going there ..are you in treatment by a psychiatrist as in are you getting your meds from tgem or a MD? I feel your pain. I've suffered thru different forms myself. Psychotherapy also helped me alot. Aldo remember your brain is having serious withdrawals and cravings..so hopefully it wont last 2 much longer on the head demanding the food junky ..if u know what i mean. Mine lasted 4 wks after that 4th wk it stopped. I kept telling myself no..do some online shopping look at cute clothes ..baby steps. One day at a time. Hang in there..it'll hopefully pass..I'm down to wellbuterin an it helps so much. Xx

food was my unhealthy friend..bad association. It doesn't control me no more. I eat to live..????

Over here I think it's a gp not md :-) I been under mental health team and psychologist but they said I wasn't that bad so put me back to my gp

If that is how you really feel then you have already been defeated. I understand depression but attitude is key. Excersize will release the endorphins in your brain that combat depression as well plus it will kick start the weight loss even more. Walk of that's what you can do but walk quickly if you can. See a counselor. Get your mess adjusted. You say you are trying to stay positive and you may think you are but to say you are fighting a losing battle just emphasizes that you you aren't truly being positive because your heart and soul aren't in it. What do you have to lose at this point. Give in and give it a try. Tell yourself every morning how amazing you are and how great of a day is going to be. When you hear or feel the negative start to creep in. ..stop it. .even yell at it out loud. ...and to combat the missing food part...chew your liquids and soft foods. Not kidding. Your brain misses that. I know it's silly but it works. the brain will recognize the chewing. . Associate it with eating and be satisfied with that. Good luck. . It is all up to you. No amount of positive thoughts we send your way will help unless you are willing to go there with us.

Chronic depression is the worst. But, it is true, however, only you can "pick yourself by the bootstraps." As hard as it is, put one foot in front of the other, and take little steps (huge on certain days!) towards positive thoughts. I grew up with a very negative father. Only when I became an adult (I don't feel I am quite there yet!) did I recognize how bad this is. What I have learned (in therapy,) is that when you find yourself going down the negative path, say to yourself (when alone, outloud; when in the company of others, in your mind) "I am NOT going down that path. No good can be found there." It took quite a bit of practice, but it has helped me. I visualize the fork in the road and see darkness one way and light the other. Maybe it will help you as well. Get up and walk. Force yourself. As the Nike slogan says "Just do it!" There is no shame in getting help. If you are not seeing a counselor, priest, pastor, rabbi (fill in the blank,) consider it. Having surgery is the first step to changing a losing battle into a chance for success. I wish you the best of luck. I have walked in your shoes ( or similar ones!)

Hi thanks for Ur message! I am doing a bit better last few days! I have chronic depression I also have a manic depressive father who I grew up with so I got mimic bipolar so It is a constant battle to get better with that! I am trying my hardest and I think people who have had severe depression (mine I ended up having a severe breakdown and lost residency of my children for a while) of any kind will understand how extremely hard it is just getting up every day! I am doing better and I have been seeing councillors since 2012 they don't seem to be helping lol

Hertsukfem31, I'm another with depression. My post-surgery plan was to make sure I walked around my neighborhood every day. Sometime I could only manage 10 minute, but some days it was a lot more. But I got up and moved. That will physically help some of the depressive symptoms (not the disease itself).

Then anytime I craved chewing, I'd eat sugar-free Jello or a sugar free Popsicle, both of which were suggested by my Very Strict surgeon. They even gave me Popsicles in the hospital! They sated my chewing craving.

Lastly, I created a support team. I asked friends to come visit me, I spoke openly with my boss and co-workers, I have a email blog to let my friends know how I'm doing, and when I'm not doing well at all. Some will send me joke, or funny YouTube videos, or come by to visit. One friend, who is a sommalier, came up with the idea of having a Water tasting night. I'd stay hydrated while discussing the differences between all the brands of bottled Water. It makes me smile just to think about it.

None of this had made the recovery any easier, or my fight with the desire to eat any simpler, but they have been successful at keeping the worst parts of my depression at bay.

Don't give up! Keep trying new things, and remember to move and stay hydrated! YOU CAN DO THIS! I BELIEVE IN YOU!

Hi yes I was doing a bit better but I am now feeling sick all the time if I do eat I feel sick if I don't eat I feel sick! I am now doing walking round the local park while my kids scooter and I push my baby boy in his buggy, so I am getting some exercise! I have had a blip where I haven't lost any weight in 2 weeks nearly but I am trying to exercise to help lose some! Another 2 weeks and I can start swimming which is great as my daughters go back to school next week,

I have felt same as u I will tell u tho those foods even in small bites fill u up fast and make u very uncomfortable so don't be in a hurry to get back to it u will eat normal food again I promise just pls don't rush and hurt yourself and umm getting back on reg food will be an adjustment to digestion so prepare yourself it smells really good however it doesn't always taste as good as u remember so u really will want to make the Protein and Vegs a priority so u don't become weak I also have trouble with meat when they say chew chew chew trust me ..... Do it lol and I have fallen into my work day habit of not eating with being so busy and trying to do everything before I leave and then being so hungry that u eat fast .... I don't advise this trust me not a good feeling it hurts so I force myself to stop and eat no matter what hope u get to feeling better about it all

Hey yea I Am just over a month in and still adjusting, I have the rare upset day but remembering to chew is my worst bit, we went away to peppa pig world (it's in UK) for 48 hours and only thing I cud have was chicken bites from Mac Donald's well I ate 2 and thought I wud throw up as I was in so much pain from eating too quickly, nothing tastes the same, it all tastes weird now, I'm guessing taste buds are changing as well as our stomachs

I had a posting the other night because I was mad at myself for getting into the shape I am in. I got past that moment and it is now time to move on.

So I read your post and the posts that followed and the thing that came to mind is one of my favorite stories as a child

"The Little Engine that Could" If you have not heard of it, the story is used to teach children about optimism, staying positive, and the value of hard work. I think that is what every person in this forum is going through when they start their permanent weight loss journey. Your didn't start this journey becasue "You think you can", you started it becase "You know you could"

Reality setting in! I'm post op day #3 and wondering why it had to come to such a drastic measure..

The Clear Liquids are hard to get in, and every time I take a med or Vitamin I freak out a little thinking it might get stuck..

Only able to get in about 15-20 grams of Protein each day..

Overall the pain has been tolerable and I am walking at least 3x day.. I understand this is the hardest part, am just trying to wrap my head around the reality of it all.. Good luck to everyone in the beginning stages of post op- am finding it takes a fair amount of mental reserve ..

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
