Good Afternoon everyone. I'm new to this but I felt it would be a great support system for me. I recently had my surgery 5 weeks ago to be exact, and I have only lost 34 pounds. My head is telling me that's good, but my heart feels like I can do so much better. I take my Vitamins and Calcium chew. The only thing I lack on is my Protein. How can I make the Protein drinks to were I like them? Or do you all have any suggestions on different flavors besides chocolate? I don't want my surgery to go to waste, and Ive been trying to commit to this, because I never stick to anything I set my mind to. I'm 22 and a full time Nursing student. I'm afraid to eat because I feel I'm going to over-eat. So only things I eat are like 2 whole wheat crackers with a little Peanut Butter, yogurt, or jell-o, Do you all have any suggestions for me?

Thank y'all so much in advance!

Hi! Welcome. Congrats on your loss. That's a great start for 5 weeks out. But it sounds like you are not eating enough. I use the app my fitness pal to help me count my calories and track my food.

I set myself on 750 calories a day with at least 60-75 grams of Protein per day. I use a small portion of fresh fruit of I'm making a shake to make it taste better or o use Premier Protein shakes , these are 30 g of Protein and pre-made.

I eat cottage cheese or Greek yogurt 100 calories, the tuna packets that are drained and come flavored, ground turkey,.... I just stay away from carbs. Occasionally I will have a small sweet potato with spray butter.

Sometimes I feel like I don't have a lot of options but then I pull up Pinterest and see all these great recipes and foods I can make.

Good luck! ????

It is amazing to me how we want to lose all the weight right now. First, 34 pounds is a lot of weight to lose in 5 weeks. Second, now that I am almost 5 months out, I have lost 81 pounds. Now, I am sort of wishing that I could lose a little bit slower since my skin is starting to be really annoying to me. When I was at my top weight of 320, I didn't look in the mirror because I could not stand it. Now, I am afraid to see myself in the mirror for all the baggy skin all over the place. Today, for the first time, I weighed 200 pounds. I am really happy about this. You are doing great. At this point, you just don't know how much your iife is going to change because of your transformation. Take this journey one step at a time, and enjoy every moment of it. I am so grateful and happy that I had my RNY. Patience is key. Work on drinking fluids and getting your Protein.

My surgeon does not recommend Protein Shakes at all, nor any liquid with calories. He said you do better with Protein from food. I think your weight loss is great! If you want to improve, you should exercise, at least cardio of some kind. I do an incline walk and burn 800 calories in 45 minutes. I am 5 months post op now, but I did start exercising the day I came home from the hospital.

You are doing great!! Congratulations. You might want to not have crackers for a while though. They are carbs and it is too soon to introduce those into your diet. Focus on protein: chicken, turkey, yogurt, cottage cheese, that sort of thing. And make sure to count your grams of Protein and get enough in every day. in fact, you should be keeping a food journal. There is something magical about writing down what you eat. Yeah, you can think about it in your head and keep track there, but when you write it down, the weight just comes right off! It's weird but true.

Best of luck.

You're doing great, don't be so hard on yourself. Also, you won't eat too much, at least this early on. You need to learn to listen to your body, it will tell you when you're "full". I still after a year will hiccup when I've had enough. Even one more spoon full of food will put me over the edge. Go slowly and you'll do good, but at 5 weeks, you need to start eating food instead of just depending on your shakes. At 6/7 weeks our I was totally off of them and getting my Protein from food only. What about greek yogurts or refried Beans with cheese melted on top? Try to expand your diet. As long as you stay away from sugar and excess fats you'll do fine.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
