Substitutes for broth?

Recommended Posts

I hate drinking broth! I've tried chicken, beef, and vegetable and can barely get it down. How much sodium are we supposed to get per day? I'm 8 days post-op and have been playing phone tag with the nutritionist since last Friday. Please! Any suggestions?

Are you supposed to have broth? Are you fine with the Protein Shakes? How about adding the unflavored Protein Powder to plain Water with some drops added from water enhancers? I really like those "cocktails", as I can add my Benefiber to it, as well as my powdered calcium citrate. 2 of those a day take care of the basic Protein requirements, have a third for extra. Good luck to You!

@@kmingle - Is that your only option? If you don't like broth, don't drink it. It may narrow your options during the all liquid phase, but why drink something you don't like?

I couldn't stand the broth the comes in either the carton or the can. Just plain nasty. But, I really liked the boulion granules. They come in a box & tasted great!

I've been drinking broth during my preop diet to get rid of the flu-ey feeling from the low carbs and calories. This morning I woke up a kilo (2.2 lbs!!!) heavier. : ( Will cut it out now so would love to know a substitute also. Kind of scary as my surgery can be denied if I weigh over 110kg..I weighed 110.2 this morning- yesterday 109.2. Feel like crying as I am starving the whole time and haven't cheated once! Dreaming of a chicken breast with Tomato paste and a slice of mozzarella melted on top...day before it was marshmallows. haha! Trying to stay strong!

How about diluted juices - apple juice, white grape juice, white cranberry juice? I was allowed to have them diluted (1/2 juice & 1/2 water) during my Clear liquids phase.

Finally got connected with the nutritionist. She said some people can stomach substituting Pickle Juice. Not sure if I would like that better lol. She said my goal is between 800-900 mg of sodium per day. I'm still trucking on with the broth for now.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
