How in the world do you get all your liquid in?

Recommended Posts

Hey there everyone, I'm new to the site as of a few weeks ago. Just getting into the forums for advice. I'm currently 8 days post op via VGS. Little about me, my highest weight was 337, went through 8 months of hoops to be approved and lost down to 296. Now as of this morning I'm even lighter having lost another 8 pounds since surgery. So I am at the smallest weight in over 20 years,,, 288 pounds!! I just can't believe it, I've been big my entire life, never really lost weight without gaining double back. So I'm so excited to be starting a new life! I've been reading all of your post and advice and it has really helped me keep chugging along! I want to thank you all!

I had a question..I'm still in the liquid diet phase. Since surgery I can only comfortably consume @2.5 oz. at a time. When I try to drink even a 4 oz Protein Shake, I get nausea, and my stomach feels like it's going to burst! And it takes me time, a long time to want to drink again. So I've started a log on everything I consume. Like in 24 hours the most I'm getting is 20oz a day! Of course leaving me so thirsty.. I finally got the Protein down. I had to buy the shots. 42g grams protein and only 3.8oz. Now is the water!

So my question is, does it get better? Will I be able to get enough Water in without feeling so thirsty?

Any tips that may help?

Thanks so much in advance!

Go back to youtube and watch a couple of videos on actual sleeve surgery, to remind yourself what has just happened to your stomach. That will help remind you you of why it is so swollen and easily filled. Just keep your fluids handy and take a small sip every few minutes. At 15 months now I can drink a cup of Fluid in about twenty minutes, so it is easy to get 80-100 ounces of fluids in a day. It just takes time. I think I was at about six weeks before I could get my 64 ounces of Fluid in.

One sip at a time. :-) I'm on 9 day post sleeve and have no issue getting 60oz Water per day. I'll mix in 1 part low cal Gatorade or Coconut Water with 2 parts water to keep it interesting and help with electrlyts, while not adding to many calories or carbs.

We all recover at a different pace, so hang in there and sip, sip, sip :-)

I'm feeling the same way. I'm not sure if I'm dehydrated or not?

That was my problem in the hospital with my recovery even though I was eating the ice all day and night.

I always worry also what if I have too much will my sleeve burst.

Good luck.

I feel the same way, am I drinking too much? What if I rip a staple? Was that a pain in my arm? Could I have a leak? Lol.. Super worry wort here!

But as usual, unnecessary worries. When I'm full, my stomach DEFINITELY lets me know. When I get nauseated, I know I pushed a little too far. We just have to learn to listen to our bodies in a new way now.

We'll be pros before you know it ;-)

Especially with the help of all these nice people on this site :-D

Warm wishes!

I am 1 day post op and my Dr said 1 oz every 10 - 15 minutes. He gave me a 30ml cop (like a NyQuil measure) and I fill that and sip. I got in about 24 oz in last night between 6 and 10. So to me that helps. I also pput an alert on my cell to beep ne every 10 minutes or so to remind me to drink

At first it's really hard to get the fluids all in. But you have to really work at it! They help you heal, help you lose weight, and early on in particular, they help you avoid serious Constipation -- and believe me, that's something you want to avoid! Keep a drink by your side at all times and sip, sip, sip. You won't stretch your sleeve! Water will always seek the easiest path, and that's down into your small intestine where it's supposed to go. Good luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
