Weight loss question - Is this typical weight loss for VSG?

Recommended Posts

I see my doctor next week for my "3 month" (it's actually 4 1/2 month) check up. I keep a log of my weight loss by week and month just to keep me honest. This is my weight loss over the past 4 months. Is this typical for VSG patients? It seems that I'm losing 1-2 pounds per week since the first month. I've always been told that is a healthy weight loss. Is that still true for VSG? My surgeon never really gave me any type of expectations for weight loss, so I'm pretty naive as to "normal". I plan to ask him when I see him next week. Any thoughts are appreciated.

Month 1 31.3 Month 2 6.9 Month 3 7.0 Month 4 6.6

Sounds like your doing good. Just follow the plan:) I dont know what's considered "normal" but that's obviously normal for your body! :)

I just had my consultation with my surgeon yesterday, Doctor Crooms of Tallahassee, FL, and he stated to me that the normal weight loss from the Gastric Sleeve surgery is about 1-2 pounds per week. So you are right on track! Keep up the Great work!!! ;)

There really isn't any typical. Some folks are slow losers, some are fast. Some stop and start with big losses then small. Sounds like you are doing well. Don't compare yourself to others, it will drive you nuts.

Looks like you are right on track. Keep up the good work! Also, I agree with Blerdgirl to try to not compare yourself to others as that can make you nuts!

agree with the others ... it really depends on the person ... each body is different ... I have found that if I stick to mainly Protein coupled with exercise 5-6x a week, I lose more ... initially the weight loss was closer to the 1-2 lbs a week for me, but, I think some of that was due to me adding muscle mass, but, lately, it has been faster ... depends on the person and the body

Celebrate your success ... that is awesome what you are doing ... a few things that help me is that I only allow myself to weigh once a week ... same day and time each week ... that helps ... also, when I am getting bummed, I pull out a pair of jeans that had to squeeze into before surgery and remember how far I have come!

keep up the great work - you are doing awesome!

You're 4 1/2 months out and almost at goal?

Yeah, I'd say that was VERY good.

Considering you are only 18 pounds away from your goal I would say you are doing GREAT! You want your final pounds to come of a little slower so you can have time to firm and tone. I bet you are feeling really good! Congratulations girl!

I am feeling wonderful. Went shopping with my husband yesterday for some new summer clothes (I live in Florida) and had to go down another size. It's just such a blessing to have this opportunity to enhance my quality of life!

It looks like you're doing a fantastic job. Keep up the good work! I can only view your month 1 and 2 losses from the cell phone app though. Is there more to see? What was your starting weight and current weight? I lost the majority of my weight post wls the first 4 months. At 5'7" I started out at 236, lost 10 pounds pre-op and was down 50ish pounds in the first four months. Here's the thing though. The closer you get to goal, things reallllllly start to slow down! I reached my surgeon's goal of 160 in no time. I now weigh 152 and my stretch goal is to weigh 145. Losing those last 7 pounds will likely take me several months. Looking at my track record, at 11 months post-wls I'm losing about 1-2 pounds per month if I'm lucky! It took me the last 4 months to lose 15 pounds. I've now become one of those skinny girls I used to want to smack when they complained they couldn't lose 5-10 pounds!

Hi!

I'm almost 3 months post op and I'm losing 3-4 pounds some weeks and 1-2 pounds others. I am 60 pounds down now (43 since surgery) and I'm happy with that. I thought I would go much faster too but my body is not the same size at this weight this time around as it was when I dieted before. I'm wearing clothes now that I couldn't wear at this weight before so I'll take it. I also agree with all the other posters in that I had to stop comparing myself to others and just enjoy the ride. I do like to see a loss every week but I don't care what it is!! LOL

Congratulations, I can't wait to be 16 pounds from goal. I'm going to throw a party when I see 199!!! LOL

Had a visit with my surgeon yesterday. At 155 lbs (down 56 lbs from day of surgery), I asked him what he would expect my goal to be and if my goal of 140 was realistic. This was his answer: I could stop right now. I am at a healthy weight (even though I'm still overweight by BMI standards), all my labs are good and I am off all medications and CPAP machine. From his standpoint, I've met his goal for my health. Anything I loose now is for vanity. Of course he was quick to point out that there is nothing wrong with vanity, but doctors view weight loss success by improvements in health, not clothes size.

I left his office inspired. I'm sure I'll loose more weight in the next few months, but I felt so proud of what I've done in the past 4.5 months. I think my obsession with the scale has become less important and the NSV's will be celebrated. Like today I'm wearing my 5'10", 145 lb daughter's size medium top from Forever 21. Now that is a VICTORY!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
