We're all thinking about it - what will real food be like after post-op diet?!

Recommended Posts

Hi all! I was sleeved open March 9th and things have been going great! I nailed a the two week pre-op diet, and the four week post-op diet is going equally well. That said, I'm thinking about what to expect with my first real food experience and my new stomach. There must be several people (including me!) who would love to hear from people currently going through that transition. Thanks and good luck to all!

Oops, sorry for typos. I sleeved on March 9th, not "sleeve opened"...; "sleeve opened" would be very unfortunate! Excuse other typos too...????

Well... it's a progression. I'm not sire what you mean by "real" food. My first 1/2 a scrambled egg felt pretty real to me, but a few weeks later, a few bites of flaky fish in a restaurant was HEAVEN! Best advice, you need less than you think so go easy\slow. Learn to enjoy leftovers!

I live on leftovers. A kids meal at Outback lasts at least two days. And I LOVE it! My biggest food expense is now my Protein powder and Protein Bars - and it's not that much money when I consider what I ate pre-sleeve. I eat "real" food, but in smaller quantities. Some foods, like eggs, are very dense and they fill my stomach very quickly. Greek yogurt - I can eat a 6 oz. container with no problem. Just be patient, don't over eat in those early days as that will definitely make you feel uncomfortable or even sick. Good luck and enjoy your new food experience.

It totally depends on how your sleeve behaves. My baby is a hot mess! Sometimes it will let me eat well and sometimes she like "nope not today sister". It's ever changing for me.

I have found that the food I used to eat doesn't necessarily taste or react in my new stomach like it used to do. Some things taste wonderful when they never did before, others horrible. Some things my stomach loves, others, it hates. It amazes me how it has all changed! The most important thing about going into new stages, is remembering to chew it thoroughly. Kinda like you are a baby again. Follow the food schedule...don't try to force foods your stomach isn't ready for. Your mind may say it is, but your stomach will rebel!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
