fat/carb intake?

Recommended Posts

On average, how many grams of fat and carbs should one have per day?

I overload on both and I would like to know a healthy amount to have each day.

Thanks!

I don't know about 'should' have. But I do know that all the successful losers I know take in less than 40 net carbs (net, not total) carbs a day and about 100 gr. Protein a day. If you do that, and you have a wls pouch with good restriction , you are not going to be able to eat enough food to get your fat and/or calorie count too high.

Gayle, I concur 100%. I personally have to keep my carbs very low as I am diabetic, insulin resistant and extremely carb-sensitive. As long as I focus on my protein, my blood sugar has come down to normal with greatly decreased meds only three weeks post-op (I'm actually off all insulin and down to only one oral med). So I agree that as long as you take care of your protein needs first you probably won't get too much of anything else...

I have to keep my carbs very low. I don't lose weight if I eat carbs, I don't feel well if I eat them, I feel bloated and uncomfortable. Most of all if I eat ANY carbs in the morning my diet is shot for the day. Even drinking a glass of OJ, it's so full of sugar that I am hungry for the rest of the day.

I don't count carbs, I just watch what I eat. I rarely go over 20 a day unless I'm having a carb fest. Sometimes I'm just in the mood for calories and I go for it. But that's probably once a month or so.

Now fat... I'm trying to incorporate good fats in my diet. I didn't realize that I eat virtually no fat and my hair, skin, and nails are soooo dry. So I'm working on that.

The only time I really push "low" carbs on people is during the liquid phase of their diet because it does cause blood sugar spikes and it does make people hungry. During the liquid phase of the post op diet people are already battling head hunger. If they eat carbs they battle stomach hunger as well and then they fail at their liquid diet.

After the post op diet people need to do what works for them. Most people know what carbs do to blood sugar/pancreas issues and if they choose to fight it, that is their choice. I choose not to fight the extreme hunger. So for me I need to keep them very low.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
