Will I Ever Stop Farting and Burping? Hiatal Hernia repair

Recommended Posts

Hi all. I got my lapband 1/30/15 and so far have been very successful. I have lost 20 lbs. Everything is going really well, my diet is great and I've been using myfitnesspal and fitbit as tools as well. But only one thing... I am constantly farting and burping.

I did have a hiatal hernia repaired at the same time as my lap band procedure... perhaps it's still healing? I was told having that having it repaired would fix the burping. The farting is the worse part. I fart ALL the time and sometimes I can't hold it in when in public.

Any suggestions on what I can do? I'm never going to meet a man with all this gas.

@@Leoakie86 if you are eating a high lactose diet or things that contain lactose such as milk or dairy products, high Protein shakes, powders or bars it could be caused by a lactose intolerance. If you never had that before, you could have developed it. I had a similar issue after surgery, the cure is to get some Lactaid chew able tablets. Trust me they will help you out, and it wouldn't hurt to add a probiotic to your diet for a while as well to get the flora in your tummy and intestines feeling good :)

Gas is usually caused by our food not fully breaking down and hanging around too long...this should help you out.

I'm a year and half out and the gas is the worst thing of all! A friend of mine is the same way and she is 10 months out. Doesn't matter how we change our diets or all the gas x, beano, phazyme you take, it doesn't help. Fortunately, my husband just laughs and goes on about it. But it is horrible when you have to work and you have to find corners or go outside before you bust! I would love to give you a word of encouragement, but I think it's here to stay!!!

Noooo don't think that!!! Seriously give your doctor a call. Having gas like that even with out WLS is a sign of digestive issues.

If your bariatric Dr. does not have a gastroenterology Dr. as part of his team ask for a recommendation and go see them. You do not have to live with flatulence.

It really does depend on what you Drink or Eat , some days I don't have it at all & some days it's like putting all day , I AM 3 years out & it Depends on what I eat or drink , even my productive burping some times kicks in big time & I also had a hiatal hernia repair , but I don't have the heartburn, gerd or Major IBS I used to , I still have the gas here & there , but make sure to mention it to your Surgeon , he/she will ask questions be honest maybe they can figure it out or help you.

2 years post-op and still farting. I never passed gas before (well, not like this). I believe it is because food just stays around long in the digestive track, giving it time to compost and create gas.

The only time I had increased burps was right after fills, when I had to kind of burp my liquids down if I gulped too fast. Sipping was the answer.

As for never finding a boyfriend due to gas....believe me, your future boyfriend will be thrilled to find a partner with whom to fart. There will be a small probationary period where you both hold it in, but past the six-month mark, you'll be tooting away in tandem.

How to Poop at Work: https://youtu.be/4Uvl9Mstj4A

This video also covers how to fart at work! I've had terrible gas since my surgery. I've been told it's just an unfortunate side effect. So thought a little humor on the subject might be nice :-)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
