surgery tomorrow

Recommended Posts

I can't believe after almost 9 months since that first initial meeting....all this time spent in doctor's offices, money spent on co-pays and saving up for this surgery, arranging time off work for my husband and myself, arranging the kids care plus rides to school for them once my husband goes back to work, packing and cleaning the house hard core to preparation and the DAY IS FINALLY HERE!

I am doing really well on the liver shrink diet and I am down 10 lbs. in the 9 days so far....today is the Clear liquids only I am not worried about handling it but I do have bad stomach pains that the only thing that will cure it is drinking milk. Luckily I have only had to drink milk three times this week during the liver shrink but KNOW that I can't today. Praying hard I don't get the pains today!

Good luck to all the other people on this forum who are also having surgery tomorrow! We can all rock this!! Can't wait to see success pictures

Good luck to you! It seems that the time has flown once the date is here. Hope your recovery is quick and uneventful.

Sounds like you may have an ulcer, or gastritis, with the pain you describe. Make sure to take the Prilosec, or whatever they prescribe, post op. I was hurting pre op too but failed to take my Prilosec once I got home because I felt they were too big. That was a mistake! After an ER visit and follow up with my surgeon we realised why I was so sick (couldn't eat or drink enough and ended up dehydrated). Found some smaller pills and the pain was better after 24 hours and then gone after about a week.

I do take an acid reducer and am taking it to the hospital with me! I was wondering about having to swallow them though since they are huge I might have to see if I can get a smaller pill

Long story short they have ruled out an ulcer since I have had the stomach issues for almost 4 years....tons of testing thousands of dollars later and we know NOTHING really. I mean I do have acid reflux, esphogitis, and irritated stomach lining....which my surgeon hopes this surgery will actually help with that!!!

Good Luck!! I'm sure you already know, but walking as soon as your able helps a lot after surgery. It made my recovery much quicker and the pain went away pretty quickly. :)

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
