Hip replacement or resurfacing?

Recommended Posts

Has anyone had a hip replacement or hip resurfacing?

I was banded in 2007 and had good success, but I have put half the weight back on and started to have bad hip pain. Now I am told that most of my cartilage is no longer there, and I am in pain when walking and moving. and I know I need to get the weight off again, I went for an adjustment in Feb and am starting to do ok.

I was just wondering if I am not along.

@@Sherr1963 my husband had a full hip replacement last May. We were banded the year before and he lost about 60 pounds before the hip replacement. I have to tell you that he is a new man. He will tell you he feels like he is 15 years younger and the "pain" he was living in is GONE.

Go to see your orthopedic surgeon and see what they think is the best course for you. My hubby is 47 and though he is young resurfacing was not even an option for him due to the damage of the hip joint. Not even one year later he is literally running down the streets of NYC and up flights of stairs with me. Where before he could not even sit in a chair or sleep at night without being in pain or even walk.

The best advice will come from your surgeon, but my friend you are most definitely NOT alone.

wow, this is just what I wanted to hear. I am only 51 and my surgeon is putting me through everything prior to doing the total hip replacement surgery. I had asked for another injection of cortisone to see if that helps and get me past my vacation in June. Its really hard to loose the weight since I am not as mobile as I once was when I first got my lap band in 2007 and had lost 80 lbs. It takes me 3 weeks to get 3 lbs off and then one bag of chips or going to dinner to put it back on.

thanks and good luck to you and your husband on the banding. it does really work, but you have to work it.

I lost 70 lbs and had both hips replaced. Lost another 80 lbs and went from painful and minimal mobility to a normal life. Weight loss and hip replacement gave me my life back. For me, this is nothing short of a miracle.

i had mine replaced at 41 at the time i talked to my dr about a resurface and he said he would not recomend it to anyone under 65 years old because the resurface in a younger person only last about 8 years needless to say i had the total done and was 100% within six months

i am going to contact the surgeons office again today and ask about cortisone shots. Hopefully this will push me past my vacation in June, Then I am going to have to take time off without pay to have the hip replaced. firs I need to get him to say yes we have done everything prior to a hip replacement.

its just so frustrating not to exercise to help get the weight off. I am trying to stick to a 800-1000 calorie day meal plan but the weight just does not want to come off.

@@Sherr1963, if you have access to a pool...exercising in the Water is a good option. I did it before the surgery..though I was in so much pain that I was very limited. But just being supported by the water made me feel better. Since the hips have been replaced, I've continued with the water exercises and now take classes. It's a great way to get your exercise in without hurting the joints.

ok here is my update, I have an appt with the surgeon on April 12 and then after I will have the cortisone shoots into both hips. Then I hope to wait the 3 mos to get the surgery on the left hip. Or after the appt with the doctor I may just get scheduled for replacement. I was trying to get past june of this year because I have a family vacation that we go on every year and don't want to disappoint any one with me not going. Its just to a cabin on a lake so there is very little movement for me except sitting in a chair on the deck.

yes I go to the pool 2 times a week, but I normally just go sit in the hot tub. But I really should just walk in the Water. That does seem to be ok. I wimp out because I say the Water is too cold and I have zero energy for anything these days.

thank you all for responding to my post I would like to keep in contact so I can ask questions to "people who have been there"

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
