Sleeve done 12/12/14 - Heartburn

Recommended Posts

I had my sleeve done and everything has gone great. I'm about 38 pounds down (not excessive but I only started out 232 lbs so my doctor told me my loss would most likely be slower than people heavier than me). I've had zero problems up until now, about 3 months out I have constant heartburn all the time. Oftentimes I lay in bed at bedtime and I thought my throat hurt but it's acid. This last week I've had acid from the moment I wake up till I go to bed, it doesn't matter what I eat. Has this happened to anyone else, if so what have you done to help relieve this? Do I need to contact the doctors office, I was just there about 3 weeks ago and don't go back until late June! I feel like I'm coughing all the time (like a smoker) but my throat doesn't hurt! Any words of wisdom, I'd greatly appreciate it! Thank you!

@@applegal79 Yes, you should call your DR and ask for a prescription for a PPI. If for some odd reason they won't give you one then ask them what antacid you can have over the counter. You don't want that acid to hurt your new stomach or cause ulcers.

@@applegal79 you can get Prilosec over the counter. Take one a day. It will reduce your overall acid production. For immediate relief and flare ups take a liquid antacid like Extra Strength Maalox. You can take both at same time.

Good luck!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
