Day 6 post op and hunger is starting

Recommended Posts

I feel like I could eat a house today....first time since surgery...another week to go on full liquids I need to start busying myself

Has anyone been chewing gum? I don't recall seeing that on the no no list.

What other ideas have worked for you?

I was told not to chew gum. I think it triggers hunger. sugar free Popsicles are good and I also find that a cup of hot tea helps.

Remember this is head hunger as nerves have been cut and will not work again for awile. That being said head hunger can be a bear. And as the other poster said I was told no to chewing gum. I too found sugar free

Popcycles to be such a good relief..it gave me something to kind of chew plus hydrated me even more. I found chicken broth gave me the most "real" food taste. That first phase is rough..I was crawling the walls the last two days ...but it will end. Hang in there.

It really is all head hunger. The Popsicles or broth are good choices. You'll find that once you start to "eat" you'll be full with very little food. You need to listen to your body and not your head. I found that most of my hunger was actually be getting dehydrated, especially in the beginning. This is where the work starts, you need to learn what hungry is and in all likelihood you'll end up like the rest of us. We eat according to a clock now, I'm never really hungry any more which is amazing. It's a learning process and class is officially started. :)

As @@SugarFreeMe said, dehydration can feel very much like hunger. You have to do your best to keep sipping those liquids. Soup, tea, Water, sf Popsicles, sf Jello all will help your situation.

If it is not dehydration, it is likely head hunger. when they performed your bypass they sever the nerves that trigger the hunger hormone and it will be some time before you feel actual hunger.

What ever you do stay away from cooking shows on tv. They are like food porn and can truly trigger head hunger. I cannot watch them at all anymore, which is fine with me.

Good luck to you!

Thanks everyone. After reviewing all of my intake for yesterday I realized that I was about 20oz less on Water yesterday than any other day so I am thinking it may be dehydration starting. I am already drinking more today because I don't want that to happen.

Started my Vitamins today and I do have a little nauseous ness going on but not too bad-even more reason for keeping the sips of Water coming.

Today is my first day to drive so I am going to take a short spin to the grocery store to get some Tomato Soup and cream of broccoli Soup to spice up the menu.

Here's to wishing you all the luck of the Irish today ????

Thanks, I don't plan to do Soups after my two weeks of full fluids. I just need to break up the yogurt/protein shake regimen a little. All the sf jello/pudding/Popsicles are killing me right now due to aspartame...ugh

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
