Oddly severe side effects from NSAIDS

Recommended Posts

So I'm roughly 2 1/2 years out (surgery November 2012) and I've done quite well. Never quite hit my goal weight but damn close.

This past year has been rough health wise for reasons outside of weight or weight loss.

I've had some pretty severe arthritis in a couple of knuckles and my knees but generally avoided needing to take anything for it.

A year ago February we did a Caribbean cruise and on the second to last day while in St. Marten I got bit by a mosquito. A couple days later and I had a severe fever, horrible bone/joint pain and was absolutely miserable. The suspect was a mosquito born illness either Dengue or Chikingunya. One of the things prescribed was Diclofenec. Within days my stomach was so irritated I couldn't keep anything down.

Stopped that and started taking some Prilosec. Eventually things calmed down but wound up getting my sleeve dilated as I really couldn't eat much thankfully though no signs of an ulcer.

However a few months ago I took some Aleve/Naproxen after a run. Within a couple hours it felt like I had a golf ball stuck in my gut and couldn't even get Water down. Wasn't like vomiting it back up, it would just sit there in my esophagus until there was enough Fluid from drinking or saliva until it overflowed back out my mouth. sleep was impossible that night as I would just choke on saliva every 30 minutes and drench the pillow in drool.

After about 12 hours it calmed down and within a day or two things were back to normal.

Well in June I was in a really bad car accident and have been battling severe headaches daily. Again I try not to take anything for them but this Saturday was really bad so I took two Excedrin hoping for some relief. Just that little bit of aspirin and it was a repeat of the Aleve. Same thing lasted roughly a day but then resolved without any real lingering effects.

One it seems really odd that mild OTC drugs that never gave me an issue before could cause such a profound response now even after just one dose. And two it really limits the options when you do need something?

Anyone else experience anything like this?

I haven't yet, thank Goodness. I take Advil Liquid-Gels for the arthritis in my hands/body, and it is my go-to for virtually every pain that I have. The thing is, though, that I HAVE to have food in my sleeve so it doesn't harm me. Even if it is just milk, something to take the KNOCK out of it, know what I mean?! No other type of N-Said works for me, never has. Being able to take N-Saids for my pain issues is one of the reasons I went with the sleeve surgery. Are you taking enough liquid in with your meds, so they can dilute properly? In any event, call your surgical team for assistance, they may be able to give you an alternate solution. Good luck to you, and I hope you feel better!

I was told by my Dr that I wouldn't be allowed to take NSAIDs after sleeve surgery. I know some have been told something different, but my Dr was very adamant.

It's definitely going to be an individual thing, I have had no issues up to this point by taking the Advil Liquid-Gels. But I've always had a stomach of iron....

I had surgery in Mexico and my surgeon dispensed a sublingual NSAID. I also picked up extra at a pharmacy down there so I would have some on hand. You may want to check into this if you need to take an anti inflammatory in the future. That way it gets into your system but never touches your GI track. However, you may want to consult with your doctor first. Yours Sounds almost like an allergic reaction, so be careful. I have two friends (one is actually my PCP) that have ended up in the hospital after severe NSAID reactions. One actually stopped breathing in the ambulance. Both of them have taken plenty of NSAIDS in the past but neither of them can EVER take NSAIDS again and it has nothing to do with WLS. (They haven't had WLS).

My doctor said no OTC NSAIDs. He will let me take Celebrex once a day but not twice a day- the lower dose. He feels the Celebrex has less gastrointestinal side effects than most OTC NSAIDs.

My doctor also said no NSAIDs at all, only Tylenol...

I was also told no NSAIDS (that would include aspirin, Aleve and Advil) because it can cause ulcers and thin the lining of the stomach. Just one of the many reasons I am rethinking whether to get this procedure or not. I am 64 and have chronic back pain and arthritis. Something to think about because yes, it does limit your options. Tylenol does nothing for inflammation.

If it caused you this much trouble then you should not take it but talk to your surgeon also.

I'm allowed nsaids but sometimes I need to dissolve pills in flavored water so as to not get that " stuck" feeling

Sometimes reading the posts here make me wonder if some people just weren't mentally ready for WLS and needed more time with the bariatric team psychiatrist. Complaining about the limited drink/food choices early on... blah..blah...blah. The living to eat mentality really needs to go and be replaced with eating to live. JS

We have to remember that everyone moves at their own pace. For some it may be harder to adjust, people may have other factors at play that feed into the unhealthy relationship with food e.g. eating disorders, trauma. I'd hope those who you are referring to address this outside of this forum, with a professional.

This is a place to feel safe to vent, seek advice, hopefully without judgement.

Compassion goes a long way :)

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.
