gmacy 22 Posted March 16, 2015 I had the sleeve completed almost 4 months ago ... prior to the surgery, I didn't have a ton of issues with heart burn, but, I certainly took antacids after certain meals and usually 3-4 times a week. I don't believe they corrected a hiatal hernia for me as I didn't have one. My surgeon had me on a script for Omeprazole for 3 months as a normal precaution for all of his patients, but, now that I have finished that, I find that I am experiencing heart burn at times ... even after a light Breakfast like cottage cheese? Has anyone experienced this? Thanks.
Elode 8,093 Posted March 16, 2015 @@gmacy Have them call it in again. I just had mine called in and I'm 4 1/2 months out. I'm not taking any chances.
wantingabetterlife 364 Posted March 16, 2015 I have a separate gastric doc and he said I will probably be on them at least a year, possibly longer. He said our smaller tummy stills produces quite a bit of acid. I did have heartburn/GERD issues prior to surgery though.
JamieLogical 8,719 Posted March 16, 2015 I was on prescribed Omeprazole for 2 month post op. As soon as I went off it, I started having acid issues, so I now take the over-the-counter dose twice a day. I'm just over 6 months post-op.
gmacy 22 Posted March 16, 2015 Thanks everyone for the feedback ... I wasn't sure if it was best to stay with the prescription, go with OTC meds or if this was a rebound effect after going with a smaller stomach and coming off of the meds ... the silly part is that I had my 3 month post-op like 3 weeks ago, but, I was still on the prescription and wasn't having any issues! You just have to love the timing!
JamieLogical 8,719 Posted March 16, 2015 If you can get a new prescription, it will likely save you some money, since you will only need to cover a co-pay. The over the counter stuff can be a little pricey.
gmacy 22 Posted March 16, 2015 Thanks - I touched base with the surgeon ... they want me to try OTC first ... I mistakenly bought some prior to my surgery thinking I needed to buy it and not realizing it was a RX they were going to give me, so, I am going to run through that first and then re-evaluate it. Has anyone seen this get better with time like some other side effects do? If you can get a new prescription, it will likely save you some money, since you will only need to cover a co-pay. JamieLogical 8,719 Posted March 16, 2015 Has anyone seen this get better with time like some other side effects do? I have read on these forums about it getting better for some people further out from surgery. I am a little over 6 months out and it hasn't gotten better for me. In fact, within the last month or two I started taking two 20mg doses a day, after having only initially been taking one after my prescription ran out. I'm still hopeful it might get a little better by the time I'm close to a year out, but if it doesn't it's not the end of the world to have to take a couple of pills a day. I'm already taking a ton of Vitamins and supplements anyway!
gmacy 22 Posted March 16, 2015 Thank you for the fast reply .. I agree on medications ... I don't mind taking them, but, at the same time, I would love to not have to take them if I can avoid them ... one of the best parts of having the surgery is reducing the amount of medication I am taking overall ... I take a heck of a lot less than I did before ... I haven't taken any Tylenol, advil or any pain meds since the fourth day after surgery ... crazy as it sounds, even my allergies are a ton better ... I am not sure if that means I had a gluten issue that I never realized, but, I certainly don't miss those! Has anyone seen this get better with time like some other side effects do? Coeur53 1 Posted March 16, 2015 Hi! I had my gastric sleeve about 9 months ago. All went well till about 2 months ago where I started have a lot (and I mean a lot) of reflux. Doctor told me it could be ulcers or an hernia which would mean having another operation...could also be stomach cancer ...anybody had this also?
gmacy 22 Posted March 16, 2015 that is no bueno ... how will the diagnose the issue? I could see an ulcer due to the higher level of acids ... were you on any antacids like Prilosec? Hi!
