Hi, I read a post earlier and now I can't find it. It mentioned that Premier Protein shakes were not good for WLS patients. Is that correct? If so, just curious why?

Thank you!

I know tons of WLS patients who love Premier Protein. What was the reason you were told they weren't good for us? I drink them daily and my doctor is just fine with that.

I've been drinking pure Protein preop as part of my weight loss plan. I see the nutritionist next Wednesday so I'll have more input.

My understanding after being told Premeir changed its formula to a concentrated blend in the Fall. Quote from Obesity Coalition on Protein and gastric bypass............

"Isolates

In general, isolates tend to have a higher concentration of Protein than concentrate forms. For whey protein isolates, the filtration process removes a lot of the lactose, minerals and fat in the product; therefore, these products have very little or no lactose and often provide more protein in smaller volumes. These products may be beneficial to those patients who have lactose intolerance. Also, isolates tend to have a better mix ability and cleaner taste, therefore compliance is often better with these products.

Concentrates

whey protein concentrates have a lower concentration of protein and higher concentration of lactose. Although the protein is of good quality, the percentage of protein will vary. Consumers can always view the nutrition label as well for accurate quantities of protein."

For me there are enough products out there to not even take a slight risk in not absorbing enough protein. And just having a NUT say it is okay is simply not enough for me...especially since some are still recommending Flintstones Vitamins. I research everything...using Sourses like Obesity Coalition and ASMBS. And lack of protein, as well as other nutrients, can take quite awhile to show up on labs. Since ( although I have not verified when Premeir changed their formula) the change supposedly was less than 6 months ago folks who used it may not show any negative affects yet.

Again...this is my summation, as well as some others I have read. I could be totally wrong but it's not worth the chance to me.

Thank you Crosby for the information. I will confirm with my Doctor and Nutritionist in a few weeks. I just can't stand the powders and for convenience I prefer ready made Protein shakes.

Crosby - do you know of a ready to drink shake that has isolates vs. concentrates. I have been reading a few labels and find some with blends of both isolates and concentrates. The only pure isolate I have found is Isopure and they come in fruit flavors vs. chocolate, strawberry, etc. Thanks!

I am sure there are some but I only do powders. If I find something I will let you know.

Have you tried Isopure RTD? They come in a ton of flavors. They're more gatorade-like vs shake like, but they use whey Protein isolate. They're zero carb, zero fat, zero sugar, and 40g Protein per bottle.

@blashlee thanks for the tip. I just came across those on the internet and thought I would try a couple. I am looking more for a shake but I will take what I can get:) I like the convenience of RTD. Thanks again!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
