Chest Pain/Hurts when I breathe in deep

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I am 2 weeks post op and today after some mild cleaning I sat down and felt really tired and winded. I few hours later I started getting these sharp pains in my chest, its worse when I take deep breaths. I thought it might be gas so I took some gas x but the pain is still the same. Are these blood clot signs? Do you have any advice?

Thank you

Did you have hernia repair, as well? If so, it could be that. Your abdominal muscles that were cut during your surgery could be the culprit, but if you have ANY ANY ANY questions that it could be your heart, CALL YOUR DR. ASAP! It can't hurt to ask, and then you are reassured. Best to you!

Getting winded easily, sharp chest pains can be serious. I would call your doc, now.

No hernia repair, I've been walking for the past hour and no changes. I am burping a lot but it hurts like hell when I burp. I had gas the first day after surgery but it was nothing like this, these are stabbing pains when I breathe in. I have Kaiser, there's no direct line for my surgeon, when I call the office it says to go to the ER.

Thank goodness! I had a partially collapsed lung after surgery, a very long time ago, your post brought it back. Make sure you do deep breathing exercises and use one of those plastic "incentive spirometre" with the ping ping balls to increase your lung power! As it can take some time to resolve :)

Ok, so I am having sharp pains/cramping on the left side of me. It has been bad the past week.... could this be because of the hernia? I had one.... I actually just posted a thread on this and now I saw your post.

Also OP, glad to hear you are fine (or will be).

Seems like I get to talk with you a lot today! Your hernia may be the cause of your pain, but my hernia repair pain is/was mostly in the are where the esophagus joins the stomach. That juncture is where the repair for me was done, and the pain (which is now minimal) is mostly when I swallow. How many weeks has passed since your surgery? If you are feeling sharp pain in your chest area, you should probably get it checked out. Just like LuvJaky (sorry if I got that wrong!), you could have other issues going on. Don't wait for it to get severe. At minimum you should call your surgical team about it. Good luck to you and let us know how you are doing! (As a side note, it was you who asked about if you were eating too much, right? This might also be why your side hurts...if you're putting too much food in your sleeve, you may be putting too much stress on the staple line, and that could mean trouble! Call your surgical team!)

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
