How many calories post-op?

Recommended Posts

I'm about a month out from RNY. (2-16-15 was my surgery). I'm doing ok at getting in my Water and Protein, and I'm down 19.5 pounds since surgery. (total of 51 down since I started the program last year)

My question is calories. I just switched to soft foods, and I'm barely able to get to 400 calories a day. Yesterday, I ended around 320. Some days I can push to maybe 500 but it's really tough!

My NUT didn't describe how many calories I should be at in this stage-- just for my pre-op and when I was on "regular foods" far out in the future. She was more focused on water and protein now-- and with the help of 1 protein supplement a day, I don't have issues getting over 60g of protein.

Did your NUT have you look at calories when you were a month or two out? How many were you able to intake? I see my NUT again in two weeks, but I was hoping to hear from others and their experience prior to my appointment.

Thanks!

Calories have not been mentioned at all. And no where in the provided literature are calories mentioned through all phases. Everything I have read and been told is about meeting Protein guidelines, measuring religiously, and good carbs only after protein. I track using my fitness pal so I do know calories but focus on Proteins, carbs and sugar. That being said I average about 550 right now...in purée phase. I had surgery 2-27 weighing 269 and weighed 249 yesterday.

Never. I even asked both my nut about calories and they told me not to worry about it at this stage. If you eat the right foods by sticking to the plan calories won't matter.

Just track your food and make sure you get your Protein, Water and Vitamins in.

For the first 3 months at least it is best to focus on Water, Vitamins, and Protein. Your stomach is still very much in the healing process and it is hard to take in a lot of food. Gradually you will be able to up your calories. I think about 400-500 is pretty average at your stage. I know at the 6 month mark I was able to get in 700-900 calories and this is still pretty much my average (8 months post op)

Best of luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
