Weight loss on 6 mo diet

Recommended Posts

Okay so I talked to my surgeon, insurance coordinator, and patient advocate and they told me that for insurance approval purpose, they would use the weight that I weighed on my first ever doctors appointment, which was 265. For insurance purposes, I have to lose 5% of my weight during these 6 months. I guess my question is how much have some of you lost during this time frame? I'm scared to lose too much however I have to lose some or I will be denied for that reason. Help!!

My insurance had this same requirement. I was 245lbs and lost 16lbs in the 6 mo. I lost a few more lbs during the pre-op diet. Looking back I'm happy to have lost that weight prior to surgery as it was a big help towards getting the weight off. If I hadn't lost it I'd have only lost 30lbs to-date, but instead I've lost 51lbs! Good luck!

Thank you! I hope I can consistently lose weight over the next 6 months. I'm ready to start my journey now(with or without surgery) but I don't want to risk ruining it for myself. How can I make these next 6 months go by quicker?! :(

You might be surprised by how quick it actually goes. I had a 6 month requirement and really used the time to change my eating habits and start practicing for post op (not drinking 30 min before/after meals, small bites, thorough chewing, etc.) and between that and all the other appointments like the sleep study, egd, psych appt, and all the other stuff, it came pretty quick. I lost 27 during the 6 months, then another 23 during the 4 week preop diet. I weighed exactly 50 pounds less than my highest weight on my day of surgery. At first I was disappointed to hear that I'd have to wait so long for surgery, but once I got into those nutrition appointments I was so glad I had the time to prepare and get ready for post-op living.

I didn't wasn't required to do a pre op diet but I didn't want a complete culture shock so I tried to eat healthier and high Protein. I just went to the surgeon yesterday lost 15 lbs in a month ! And I don't even feel like I tried to lose weight just trying to prepare

I know it will probably go by fast and there is several changes I need to make prior to surgery. Part of me knows it will be good but the other part of me is ready to go ahead and get rid of this extra 120 lbs I'm packing around!

Congratulations! That's awesome! Let me know how everything else goes for you!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
