Facts vs reality of weight lost

Recommended Posts

I am in the process of completing all of my pre op requirements for RNY and I am curious about the real life total weight loss from those who have had surgery at least one year ago. The docs keep suggesting that it is expected that an RNY patient will loose 70% of their excess weight but in all of the posts I've read it seems like those on maintnence seem to have lost more than 70%. I know every body is different and has different results but just looking to hear people's experiences.

I am just 5 months post op and I have lost 82 so far. I have another 60 to go. It does slow down after the first couple months but I have been losing on average 3 lbs per week. I can live with that.

At my clinic, patients are expected to lose 60% of their excess weight by their six month post-op check up and 80% by their one year check up. I had my three month post-op check up this past Thursday and have lost about 53%. Right now, I'm losing a pound every four days.

I am sure that 70% of excessive weight loss is the average for everyone that they are tracking. It could be that you are seeing better results with those that are actively on this site because maybe those that are highly engaged in the process tend to do better than those who are not. Just purely speculation. However, it could be that those of us on here looking for guidance, offering our personal experiences as help for others, etc. are "above average." I would like to think so!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
