Heartburn feeling after every sip!

Recommended Posts

Sleeved 3/10. I'm trying to sip my Water but the heartburn/bubble I feel after every sip is horrible! Maybe my sips are too big??

I did have about 4 bites of applesauce in a toddler spoon and that went down fine. I was scared to try anymore.

I'm really confused on what I should be attempting at this stage. I'm on full liquids (Protein shakes, applesauce, cream Soup, sf jello/pudding/Popsicles).

Also i completely sobbed on the phone today when the nurse called me for a follow up. She asked me if i had a "what the hell did I just do" moment. Sure did -since the hospital. She assured me it's completely normal and it will get better. I can't wait for it to get better!

Did you have hernia repair, as well? That can take a while to feel better. I had my surgery on 12/3/14, and to this day I still have trouble getting Water down. My surgical team says it could take up to a year to feel "normal". Oh boy!

You may need an acid blocker...Nexium, Prevacid, Prilosec. My surgeon prescibes all WLS patients for a minmum of one month. Acid reflux is a very common side effect of VSG.

Hope you feeel better

Call the doctor and get a prescription for a PPI. It will make all the difference in the world when you can eat without your tummy burning. Also call the nurse or nutritionist back and have them review what you should be eating on your full liquid phase. Every program varies and what my team allowed on full liquids may not be what your team recommends.

I was given acid blockers to take the first week, and recommended to take Prilosec or similar OTC ppi for the first 2-3 months. Try that, and try taking very tiny sips and spacing them a minute or two apart.

I also discovered that VitaminWater Zero was much easier for me to drink than Water. I found the New whey Protein tubes in fruit punch (42 g protein) and pour half one into a bottle of Vitamin Water and sip, sip, sip. I have been drinking 3 of these daily since day 3 and really feel like the Protein and fluids have helped me feel better much faster.

As to Full liquids, I was told that they should be thin enough to go through a straw (don't actually use a straw!). So on Soups they should be thinned, pureed, and strained of any solid or chunks. I cant have full liquids until day 7. Crazy how different all of our plans are.

I do have an acid blocker but yesterday was my first day for it(they are having me break it open and put it on my applesauce. Guessing that takes a day or two to kick in. I will have to try some Vitamin Water or some diet V8 splash.

I know what I'm allowed to have I'm just unsure how often I should be eating it? Do I do 3 meals? I really don't have any appetite.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
