Couch to 5k

Recommended Posts

I just started this. I have aspirations of doing some 5K in my future. I have always wanted to do one of the Run Disney events. http://www.rundisney.com/

I've been doing OK with the app and keeping up. However I do feel I am still carrying around a lot of weight and it's hard on my knees. That being said it's been a nice change from just walking or doing the elliptical. The program getting the heart hate up there for sure.

I think my next step is going to a shop by me called Road Runner Sports and get fitted for a better pair of shoes. This might help with the knee and back tenderness I get.

I'm using the 5K Runner app on my iPhone which has the audio prompts and ties into the Nike+ App.

@@OneDollarBill I HIGHLY recommend investing in some good, well-fitting running shoes. That is NOT an area where you want to cut corners to try to save a little money. Also, you should get high-quality inserts as well. Someone at the running store should be able to help with those as well. I use SuperFeet brand, which my physical therapist recommended, but there are many options available based on you individual situation.

Another thing you should look into is a good post-workout stretching routine. Several years ago when I started running for the first time, I had serious problems with my knees (thus the need for a physical therapist) and I learned some critical stretches to do after every single time I run. It has made a huge difference.

@@JamieLogical Thanks for the advise. My co-worker who has lost a ton of weight and now runs a 5K almost every morning before work stressed the same things. I have a good pair of New Balance shoes but they weren't meant for running. They are great for walking and other gym activities. I want to get the right gear so i don't wind up with any set backs.

On a side note since my first post in this thread. I pulled the trigger and signed up for my first 5K. I signed up for the Avengers Super Heroes 5K at Disneyland. It's not till November so i have 7 months to keep on it.

@@JamieLogical It should be. The course runs through California Adventure and the main Disneyland park. The only downside is the event starts at 5:30AM lol. The parks will be all lit up and by November all the Christmas lights will be up.

I just got back from lunch and got fitted for a pair of shoes. I'll try them out tonight :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
