To tell or not to tell?

Recommended Posts

Did you tell folks (friends, family, coworkers) you were getting the band or not? I haven't gotten mine yet and I'm thinking about not saying anything to folks because I don't want to be judged. Would love to hear what other people did (tell or not) and the reactions you received.

You are going to be judged either way. Don't worry about. Tell who you want and don't tell who you don't want to know. Do what you think is best. I told some people but eventually I came to the reliazation that maybe I could help or motivate someone by telling them my story. Good Luck

You can see a similar thread I started in May on the same general topic, within the Introductions area of LBT. The thread is entitled, "Help with Nay-sayers". There are several helpful replies from bandees who have various opinions about to tell or not.

There are many threads around here about this. Use the Search function on the blue toolbar near the top of the page. I'd suggest you click on Advanced Search and then click on Thread Titles Only (pulldown menu) and put in words like tell or secret. There's also a poll or two around here asking if you told. This is a great question. I have told only my parents, my husband and one friend who wants to be banded as well. I will not be telling my boss, my paperwork will say I'm having major abdominal surgery.

The surgery is my business, I have no desire to have "food police" checking out what I eat, and asking me all the time how much I've lost. I'll know they mean well, but I just don't want to hear it.

I chose to tell everyone. I figure I was going to be judged either way. I heard so many stories from people too. You have to do what is good for you. I thought it was going to be hard to explain my pre-surgery diet.

I had to reply to this. I decided not to tell anyone who doesn't live with me. The reason why is that I don't want people hanging around watching what I eat, how I eat, and telling me horror strories about someone they knew who died from weight loss surgery. Oh and not to mention the sabatogers and the well meaning people who ask 1000 questons.

I have been banded 2 months and I am glad I didn't tell.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
