All,

I just need a bit of clarification. When speaking of gas pain, are you referring to gas pain, do you mean gastrointestinal pain--stomach cramps, bloated feeling, etc...

OR

do you mean gas pain as in the gas used during the procedure?

OR

Both?

Thanks!

For me it was surgical gas pain that manifested by sharp pain in the back shoulder area. It lasted about a day and a half and eased up by using the heating pad on the area alternating with walking around and moving my arms.

I experienced no abdominal gas pain--the kind that's relieved by passing wind. That would have been easier to handle, I think.

I had no pain from the incisions if you're wondering. Just a little tugging sensation when I stood or sat down.

From what I am experiencing and read, the gas pain after surgery is in you back, neck, shoulders, sides, different than adominal gas from eating. I bought all this gas x, but now hear that only helps when you eat, your stomach. My gas is from the surgery, the air pumped into you during surgery. Some say it goes away in a couple days, others up to 7!! I am praying for the shorter experience!

I had abdominal gas pain, but I do believe that most of it was from the surgical gas they instill, either way it has to come out and for me it came through my GI tract but getting there caused mulitple sharp gas pains in multiple areas, hope that helps I am sure it's different for everyone! Good luck, JoAnne

Well not to be gross but ever since I had the procedure I have had intestinal gas really bad. I really don't understand why but I have a theory that because I am unable to bulge it is coming out the other end. I have been unable to bulge since the procedure. Is this normal ???

I had surgery on 4.25.07 and sometimes I still get gas pain. It was pretty bad for about 1 1/2 weeks after surgery. I get the pain in my left shoulder, it even shoots up into my neck and I swear sometimes even my earlobe hurts!!! It's normal. Don't ignore symptoms, but don't panic. After experiencing it myself, I can understand why some people think they might be experiencing symptoms of a heart attack.

They fill your tummy up with CO2 during surgery so they have more room to work. And the only way it comes out is by slowly seeping into your intestines and coming out the old fashion way. My experience was awful. I thought the surgery was so painful until a friend of my convinced me it was just gas pain. Drinking warm liquids helped, heat moist pack on my achy parts, walking, walking, walking... and interestingly enough... My surgeon told me to lay on the floor and roll from one end of the room to another. It was so painful, but it really worked wonders!!!! Gas X doesn't really work since it won't help you release the gas that is not in your intestines yet. I found it was best to just move whether you want to or not.

I had it all..... the more I walked, burped and farted AND used GAS-x the better I felt... (Walking helped the most)

My gas pain after surgery was from the gas used to expand the stomach for the surgeon to move around inside. It took the first four days to get rid of it. It wasn't the kind of gas that you fart out.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
