Packing for the Hospital

Recommended Posts

I want to start packing my overnight bag for the hospital, any advice/suggestions on what I need to take with me?

Lip Balm! I was SO glad I took mine. My mouth was SO dry after and you can't drink right away, so the lip balm really helps. I also packed my brush, tooth brush & paste, and a change of clothes. Oh and sock with grip on the bottom...I HATE hospital socks! :)

A robe (So you can walk around in your hospital gown without your bum hanging out!)

Slip on shoes (The socks wouldn't have worked as well at my hospital. When I was bed they had my feet connected to these things were supposed to prevent blood clots. I had to put on shoes and/or socks each time I got up.)

A pillow or two. (It's nice to have your own in the hospital bed with you. But, more importantly, you will need them for the drive home to hold against your tummy. It helps with the bouncing.)

ASK YOUR DOCTOR FIRST because they may already be giving you some type of medication-- but my doctor gave me a prescription for a patch to put behind my ear for naseau that I put on a few hours before surgery and left on for a few days. I did not wake up naseous and have not experienced any naseau since surgery. A lower dose version is also available over-the-counter.

Good luck to you!

Loose clothing to wear home....and I took a lap blanket to have in car. I had an 85 mile ride and the blanket allowed me to curl up and relax.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
