Is anyone getting surgery without having insurance?

Recommended Posts

I was wondering if anyone is paying out of pocket and how that process is going for them?

SO many of us paid out of pocket. Then again most of us oped for out of the country surgery. If your insurance doesn't pay then sometimes you have to save your own life and do what you have to do! I got a medical loan to help with mine and since it was rather an inexpensive but great experience I'm happy I was able to do it.

Thanks for the reply, Veronica! My insurance was willing to do the surgery for me and I did everything they asked me to do... But last minute, they said they wanted me to have weight loss progress for 6 months. I showed them my progress from the last 6 months but they told me they wanted me to start from this month. It's kind of annoying and has brought my spirits down. I am thinking about definitely paying out of pocket, I might go with the medical loan like you did. I just feel so lost in the process but thank you so much :)

Well I will tell you I went to Mexico to get my surgery done and did my research hardcore. I definitely do not regret it and even though I'm currently in a stall feel really satisfied with my progress. The place was very helpful and felt like I was treated very well. My insurance was willing to pay to but only 50% of my surgery which still left quite a price tag. 20k to be exact. So with my out of country experience and everything I ended only spending 9500k that included hospital stay, doctor fee, hotel stay, medication and plane ticket and passport. I only suggest it cause I was so happy with my results. I wish you luck and hope you can get your journey started soon!

I'm self pay in Texas. I'm choosing state side even though the Mexico hospital is maybe 30 miles from my house. The difference in price is about 4k. It's $10,500 for my doctor including checkups for the next year and a half. I'm going to take my deposit tomorrow.

I am self pay in Missouri. I was told that since I was self pay, appointments would be scheduled quickly and my requirements would be less but I have not heard from the office since they called to tell me my insurance does not cover the procedure that I already knew. So I am waiting...

I am a self pay in Texas because my insurance does not cover any WLS. My surgeon is Dr. John Mason in Bryan, Texas. Even with selfpay there were tests that I had to clear in order for Dr. Mason to agree to my surgery. They were EKG, chest xray, blood work and psych evaluation. Dr. Mason works out of St. Joseph's Hospital and they do offer a "selfpay" discount. When all said and done with tests, surgery and hospital costs I will be out of pocket approximately $12,000.00. I started this journey back in January and will be having surgery on May 22, which is my choice. Surgery could have been a lot sooner if it would have been more convenient for me to done so.

If anyone in this area is looking for a great surgeon, I highly reccomend Dr. Mason. On me personally he has performed 2 breast biopsies, Double mastectomy (I am a 4 year BC survivor, woohoo!) and gallbladder removal. All of which were without incident and I breezed through with flying colors and believe that it was because of his excellent surgical skills and passion for his patients.

I am self pay as well. I considered Mexico but for me the 2 year aftercare program offered by my local group was the tipping point. Currently waiting for my first appointment next week

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
