After doing quite bit of research while waiting for insurance approval I had decided on Gastric Sleeve. Got insurance approval and found out that only Bypass is covered. Very disappointing. Has anybody petitioned insurance to cover an alternate surgery and been successful. I certainly can't afford sleeve without insurance coverage. I will proceed with bypass but think I would have been happier with the sleeve

Well that stinks but I have friends that have had GB and are all doing great and dropping weight. If that helps at all :)

I agree with Elode. I have friends who had GB and are doing great, feel great, got thin, and healthy. I don't believe I would hesitate if it were me, and they agreed to pay for it, but not the sleeve. I'd be first in line!!

Hi there! I had planned on having sleeve and was switched to bypass after learning that the sleeve could make my reflux worse.

I am so happy I had bypass. All of my co-morbitiies are gone now. I am off medications with the exception of hypo thyroid replacement. I feel fantastic!

It is hard work and a new way of life. I think both surgeries require a lot of lifestyle change.

The most important thing you can do for yourself is feel very comfortable before you go in. You must have a positive attitude in WLS or you will struggle to make the necessary changes.

Good luck on your upcoming surgery!

@@bls01 I really think it's wrong for an insurance company to dictate which surgery you can have. I would see if you can appeal this.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
