Dr. Zavalza on March 21st!

Recommended Posts

I finally made a decision on my surgeon.... After 3 years of researching and reading stories, talking to numerous coordinators and surgeons, I have picked Dr. Zavalza. This had to of been the most stressful part of this entire process. It's already scary enough leaving the country alone, but to pick a surgeon and hope and pray he's a good one! In the beginning I paid a deposit it have surgery with Dr. Lopez and Osuna, but chickened out and got my money back. I continued reading stories and then decided that I would go with Dr. Garcia. He had soooo many positive reviews, and I was interested in the single incision surgery. After talking with a bariatric surgeon here in Houston I realized I didn't really need to spend the extra money on the single incision when a lot of people say the other scars are hardly even noticeable. So I was all prepared to go with Dr. Garcia when I saw that bariatric pal had some specials going on. I looked over the surgeons and I knew Dr. Ponce had great reviews, and he used to be around 6k when I first started researching all of this. Then I saw Dr. Zavalza and he looked familiar to me.... The reason being because he worked beside Dr. Garcia on his team. He has just branched out on his own now, doing his own thing. I was added in on the Facebook group and talked with some patients of his, and I trust him to do my surgery. I have also seen how much he truly cares about his patients. I am still extremely nervous and don't really know what to expect, but I will be sure to keep everyone posted :) I am leaving on the 20th! Ahhhh. Wish me luck!

Congrats on choosing your surgeon. You are right that it is a BIG deal and it sounds like you did a lot of research and chose what was right for you. Good luck with your surgery!

I would trust Dr. Ponce to do my surgery. The only thing that kind of turned me away from him was that I read from others he didn't speak English, or not very well. It made me a little anxious. It has nothing to do with whether he can perform my surgery, it was just that I wanted to be able to communicate openly with my surgeon. I do remember reading Dr. Ponce will give you a dvd of your surgery which is pretty cool! :)

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
