Coming up to 1 yr post op

Recommended Posts

11 months months out & I've lost over 100 lbs. Throughout the time I've noticed I can sometimes eat more than usual & by that I don't mean over eating. It simply takes more to get me full than other times. This varies from day to day & I don't understand why... One day I can eat a cup of veggie Soup, the next I can barely get a cup down. I'm not complaining just bad for when I want to measure all my meals. I've heard several ppl mention this after weight loss surgery but I don't know if they all have a day to day, & even within the same day, reaction. What causes this? Is this normal? Who has this same concern besides me?

I'm a little over 3 years post-op, and have the same experience. Mornings, seems like I can eat more, afternoons/evenings, less. Some days I can hardly eat anything.

Certain foods make a difference. salad, fruits, veggies, yogurt, etc...I can eat more of.

meats and other firmer foods, less

Yeah... chicken tenderloin are generally the same (1-2) but fish varies. I bake nearly all the meats I consume... 4oz fish fillets I used to be able to eat the whole thing but now if I'm really starving I get less down. I've noticed the hungrier I get the less I eat. Soup is crazy to me cuz it's never consistent, whether its just both or veggie or meat inside, doesn't matter.

My nut says that Soup should be drained and eat the solids 1/2 hr apart from the liquid

Yesterday I drunk a shake only because I had to get my Protein in but wasn't hungry at all... The night before I was starving & I ate chicken tenderloin & broccoli. It's not so much as irritating as it is trying to understand what is going on...

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
