How long did you have to wait to drink alcohol post op? I'm not a big drinker at all, but am curious as to how long it will be before I can have a drink or two with the girls at happy hour.

Thanks!

I waited 4 weeks and started with Titos Vodka and Water with lemon and lime. I didn't get drunk super fast as they said we would. My hangovers are worse than before. I didn't use to get symptoms they next day but now I have headaches and feel really dehydrated. Oh yea and I get really tired when drinking....

Good luck!

This was a big question for me pre-surgery as well. Not a big drinker but like to have a glass of wine when out with friends. I am 6 months out and can now drink anything easily, just not as much as I used to without feeling the effects (probably because I have less food in me!). I tried to have a "skinny cosmo" a few weeks out and one sip did me in - it tasted like raw alcohol and burned going down. 4 weeks out I tried a light white wine and was able to drink half a glass. Since then I have found that white or rose wine is the easiest thing to drink - and I can have a glass every night if I want to. I can also have margaritas and cosmos again but only one drink - two is too many. I don't feel deprived at all and really look forward to my glass of wine at night. Many on the site choose not to drink because it's not the best choice for calories - and I get that. For me, I am finding that it works in moderation and allows me to continue my social life just like before surgery - eating and drinking less of course - just like my skinny friends were doing all along!

My program has a strict NO ALCOHOL policy for 1 year post-op. I even had to sign a contract with my surgeon pre-op!

This was an important topic for me since in the fall ill be going back to school in enology and viticulture (winemaking, Vineyard management and related fields). So I'll be tasting about 200 wines per term in my classes although most of those tastes will be spit out. But wine will be a big part of my life. When discussing it with my surgeon he told me to stay away for three months (surgery date 1/20/15) and then after that assess where I am in my goals. I might have to stay away from wine till my classes begin to keep the calories down, but that will be 8 months post surgery and I'm hoping to reach my goal well before that. I've already lost 67lbs total and my goal is 130 lost, so that seems reasonable.

About a week ago I had two vodkas while out just to test the situation and it went down easily and I didn't get more than tipsy. But that test is over, so now I won't touch it again till at least the three month mark.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
