Depression after the Gastric Sleeve

Recommended Posts

Has anyone suffered from short term depression or difficulty remembering things after having the Gastric Sleeve surgery? I am now almost 3 months post surgery and I'm still having troubles with memory and forgetfulness. I know its starting to have a very negative affect on my attitude as of late. I went from being extremely sharp memory wise to now not being able to remember what I did just a few days ago. I have been on the Vitamins both gummies and now a prescription pill form. But it still seems like I am off. And the more off I get the more frustrated and depressed I become.

That must be upsetting. I'm on the on ramp for menopause and having memory issues, names especially ("Honey, who was that guy, he was in that movies, you know, with that other guy?") You're doing great with the weight loss though. Good news/bad news?

Yeah I need to change my weight loss number. I'm down now closer to 115lbs instead of 60. I know the rapid amount of body mass that is coming off of me is affecting my memory. I just wasn't expecting it to affect in a way to actually cause more harm that what I need to deal with.

115 pounds in 3 months??? That's an awful lot for such a short time. I wouldn't be surprised if that had something to do with it but maybe you can see your doctor to have blood work done to make sure everything is ok. Good luck!????

Yeah I've had blood work done. I'm going to try and setup an appointment to see a neurologist per my primary care physician. Just to try and figure out a way to fix my memory issues.

I was depressed at first, but it does definitely pass. I think that honestly, I missed eating. It was comfort for me. And without that shield I was forced to see things I was denying, or things that I covered up with food. For me it passed.

Not "depressed" per se, but definitely not myself... snappish, forgetful, ditzy, crying at the drop of a hat, (typically happy tears), not at all normal for me for the first few months. It passed. They say that hormones and toxins stored up in fat cells makes for a wild ride the first few months or while we are rapidly losing fat tissue. If you're really depressed though, see someone for help! This roller coaster is hard enough to deal with and you may need a little help, (chemical or talk) to get through it.

Are you taking B-12 Vitamins? They're my happy, energy pills. But.... I have to take the timed-release ones because the fast-acting, sublingual pills make me cranky – like I'm over-caffeinated. If you're not taking B-12, you might give it a try. Good luck!

Yes I see a therapist and I'm trying to work things out. But it's still rough trying to be your own self-cheerleader when you just feel shitty all the time.

Yes I take B-12. Its one I put under the tongue and let dissolve.

Can some of y'all reassure me that this depression will go away? I'm 7 weeks out.

Since you're already seeing a therapist, I'll stay away from the psychobabble stuff that I'm not qualified to dispense anyway. But here's another question: are you getting enough fluids in? I've found that when I'm running dry, I feel tired, head-achy, and slightly depressed. Try punching up the fluids to 64 oz or more every day. I drink 128+ oz a day, so if you need tips on how to do that, let me know....

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
