Lap Band Surgery in Mexico, Revision in U.S.

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone, I am new here. I was banded in Mexico by Dr. Jose Rodriguez in Acuna Mexico in 2004. I was never able to have a successful fill and have gained almost 80 pounds since my surgery. I want to have a revision to a sleeve, but do not know if a doctor here would do it. I do not have any kind of operative records or anything. I really want to get this thing out, I am constantly getting stuck and throwing up, I can't live like this anymore! Has anyone had a similar situation and had a surgeon here do it and insurance cover it? Any information or stories would be greatly appreciated! I am in South Bend, IN. Thanks so much!!

First check with your insurance to see if they will cover it. Then look into surgeons in your area and meet with them to see if they will do it. I'm sure there are lots of people that have had the band while living in one state and then moved over the years

I was banded when I lived in Germany in 2001. I had trouble finding good follow up care when I returned in 2002 but by 2011 it was not a problem. My Bariatric COE has been so good and caring! I had my band removed September 2011; sleeved Dec 11, all covered by insurance .. maintaining huge loss for 2 years?

I agree with the above posts. The best thing you can do is be completely honest with your new surgeon once you find one. Bariatric surgery has become much more common than it was when you were first banded so I'm sure it won't be a problem. Best of luck!

Hey! I had the band done in Mexico in 2010. I had a ton of issues, now i'm getting it removed tomorrow, and the sleeve done. I'm going with Dr Poplawski at Barix Clinics here in Ypsilanti. You may want to try him. If he is doing it for me, He can do it for you to i'm sure :)

I was banded in Mexico in 2007 and I'm having a revision done by Kaiser So Cal on 5/4. I had old X-rays and info about my band but my doctor didn't need any of that. They did a scan so he could see the condition of the band and port sites. He said he takes out bands from other doctors, including those in Mexico all the time. I think it's becoming very common for some of us with the older bands to finally become fed up with the throwing up and problems.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
