Period. Please read and shed some light

Recommended Posts

I am 28 years old and when I reached my heaviest weight, 352, decided enough was enough. I have PCOS, hypertension, hypothyroidism, sleep apnea, gastritis, fatty liver disease, and few other medical conditions that are not related to my obesity.

My menstrual cycle has always been fouled up. I can go six months without having a period. I had my surgery in December and was on my period. When I came home from the hospital, I got my period again making that twice in December. I did not have it in January. In February, I got my period twice again. The second time has left me with some concerns. I don't understand why I am not getting my period twice in a month and the second time around instead of bleeding during the day - I bled only at night. I am normally the exact opposite. My period are heavy and the cramping is painful. Finally, I stopped bleeding a few days ago and now I am spotting again. Can anyone shed some light on this? I am sexually active with my partner of four years. There is a possibility of a pregnancy but, I took a test about a week ago and it was negative.

Hey @@TiffanyMarie , I have somewhat gone through the same as you. Having pcos for the last almost 15 years I've always had fouled cycles. Birth control specifically depoprovera needle is what has worked for me. Now after surgery i too had a lot if irregular perriods and multiple times of the month and once for about 3 weeks straight. I have since switched to the patch and it has helped regulate my cycle. I also had my surgery in December so I'm right there with you. What i have been tokd by my endocrinologist is that the rapid weight loss makes our hormones go crazy and hyperactive, also we become extremely fertile at this stage but pregnancies so early on are not recommended. So if you get an other test and are not pregnant i would suggest talk to your doctor and see what he suggest is best method of birth control as it could help.

@freshair Thank you for taking the time to respond to my post! Today, I am still spotting. I made an appointment to see my primary care physician on this Thursday afternoon. She said we need to do a pap smear and take a look into my hormone levels. Just like you said, she thinks with all the weight loss thus far my hormones are going crazy. I plan on taking another pregnancy test tomorrow morning. I remember the surgeon saying I would become more fertile and it's not recommended to become pregnant until at least a year after surgery. One of the reasons I had the surgery is because I do want a family. I have read so many stories about women who have had PCOS and then had the surgery, which led them to become pregnant. I was originally put on Ministrin, which is a bc pill. I do not want to have to take another pill and therefore, haven't taken it since I had the surgery. I know it's not smart AT ALL. I will be talking to the doctor on Thursday and ask about the patch or the depo. When you were on the depo did you gain weight?

No problem anytime specially when I can relate so closely to you. I can't really tell you if i gained weight because of the depo cause there were so many factors that could've contributed to my weight gain so i can't say it was the depo or the pcos or bad eating habits. Ehat i can say is that the weight gain was probably a combination of many many things. I to want to have a family as I'm 30 and haven't had children and yes i too was told that it will be easier to conceive after surgery but not safe for either of us so soon. And i was also told that we can't use birth control pills anymore after bypass as we wont absorb them properly so they won't work. Hope everything works out for you and things start to clear up. Get a blood pregnancy test just to be 100 % sure

Oh my gosh, I wasn't told that regarding bc pills. Well, I guess it's a good thing I haven't taken them. I will ask for a blood test on Thursday just to be on the safe side. I will keep you posted. I don't know how to add you as a friend on here so if you know add me. I'd love to keep in touch with you.

I had surgery on 1/6 and my cycle has been all over the place. In fact, I can hardly call it a cycle at this point because I have been bleeding for a full month. I am due for a new period, but the last one hasn't stopped yet and all that happened is it got heavier. Per the nurses in the program, this is not unusual. It's a combination of the surgical trauma and the tight relationship between estrogen and fat. Apparently losing a lot of the one makes the other go crazy. Either way, I'm ready for this phase to end. Today they took some blood to check my Iron levels in particular, since I'm losing so much blood. Lots of fun here. But if this is the worst that happens, I'll still count myself lucky.

I wouldn't call mine a cycle either. I haven't stopped bleeding since the second period at the end of Feb. I didn't even think about asking them to check my Iron but, I will at the appointment tomorrow. My mother in law told me this evening that I look a little pale. I don't feel too weak though; Thank God. I took another pregnancy test this morning and it was negative. I don't think this is a pregnancy. I think that like both of you have said... my body is just going nuts and this is one of the ways it's acting out so to speak. I wish it would stop though. This is ridiculous. Just saying.

Oh trust me i feel you. I've had to get blood transfusions because of my prolonged cycles so definitely get your hemoglobin checked. Cause between blood loss during surgery and all these prolonged periods your hemoglobin might be low. Take care of you and keep us informed

So I had a similar situation. Last year I was on the Depo shot which stopped my period. I got off the shot and was not taking any birth control. It took about 2 months and when my period came back it was very similar to what you are saying. Finally for about 2 months straight I had heavy bleeding. I went to my Dr. and she explained to me that when you have a period there is a lining that sheds in your ovaries. When you stop having a period for any reason that lining does shed and it builds up. So when you finally start having a period again you have to shed all the linings that have built up and your period can last a long time until you are done. This could be the same issues you are having after weight loss your period kicked back in and now your shedding the built up linings.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
