The truth... the whole truth.... and nothing but the truth

Recommended Posts

So things have moved very fast for me. I met my surgeon for the first time in late Jan. Within 1 month, I completed all the appointments and a sleep study and upper GI. I have a tentative datr of April 6th. I have gained 2.8 lbs since my first visit. Not making an excuse, but I have quit smoking. That was a requirement as well. I am eating all the things I won't be able to eat once surgery is done.( well at least for a while). I wonder if this is part of the emotional process. I start my 2 week preop on the 23rd and that's scarier to me than they surgery. I see all of these posts where thry have lost weight waiting on surgery.... and I have gained.... any thoughts?

I had a few "food funerals" but they were before I started my pre-op diet. I felt I had to eat those things and get it out of my system. However, once I started my pre-op diet I was pretty gung-ho. I was more terrified of my liver being too fat and getting in the way during my surgery that I stuck with my diet for four weeks and lost 14 pounds.

A lot of insurance companies require their patients to diet for a period of time prior to surgery. This diet sometimes lasts 6 months to a year. If I could do that, there wouldn't be any need for the surgery. In fact, my doctor's preop was only the day before on Clear liquids, but I was self-pay!

Gaining during the 12 weeks of classes I have to do is one of my biggest fears. Kaiser wants us to lose 10% by the end of the 12 weeks. For me hat is 27.2 pounds. Eekkk!!

I had to have 6 months of documented weight loss appointments with my pcp. I did that before I ever went to the surgeon. My surgeon requires a 2 week pre-op diet which I start 3-23. Luckily, both of my insurances will pay but I will still have some out of pocket expense.

I know I will be ok once I start the 2 week diet. But until then, I am battling being a pig. I am so excited for food NOT to control my life anymore!

I had my first visit Feb.16th and have gained 5 lbs since. I have been over indulging in all the things that I know I shouldn't be eating after surgery. My doc does not require a pre op diet other than Clear Liquids the day before, but does want to see some weight loss. I feel doomed....I am getting on track this week. Baby steps is what my nutritionist recommend. ..so first step I am taking is no soda. Pray for me..or ayye more so my family. .:(

I gain some because I wasn't suppose to go under the BMI I needed. If it's not going to keep you from being approved let it go and work harder.

I called them my "last meals", enjoyed things I knew I wouldn't have again for awhile, if at all. But now that it's over - the surgery, that is - I am glad I did it (the last meals) because now I am free of all that! A suggestion for those who are SOOO very hungry in your pre-op stage, dealing with how hungry you are: sugar-free popsicles. LOTS of them! They give you the chewing factor you need, the crunch (which you won't have for awhile after surgery), and little-to-no calories. They saved my (now disappearing) bacon!

I definitely mourned the loss of food while I was pre-surgery. I had all of my favorite things....several times. I felt like I would "never be able to eat ______ ever, ever again." I think that is a pretty normal thing to go through. I don't think that it indicates that you will be any less successful. I had a terrible time sticking to my pre-op diet, and have been incredibly successful after surgery (in my humble opinion anyway). So do the best that you can!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
