My surgery is Monday 3/16. I have not told my close friends as of yet, To be honest. I'm afraid of being judged. What many people don't understand is that a lot of work still needs to be done even after a gastric process. I fear as the weight falls and I attack the gym as I have been doing so for the last 6 months. I will be judged. The funny thing is most of the time when we meet we do so over wings and beer (I don't drink they do) if not wings it's always some type of food. But they are all small. I'm the biggest one there. Ok I'm babbling how and why should I tell my close friends. My wife is very supportive. She sees the struggle 1st hand.

I have also been very selective with who I share this with. It is an important medical decision and not one that was taken lightly and I'm really not interested in hearing everyone else's opinions on the matter. Maybe after surgery you can shift the gatherings to more active things instead of wings and beer? If that doesn't work remember that "Some people have come into your life for a reason, a season or a lifetime". Let go and move on.

I'm also having surgery 3/16. Good Luck to you.

Good luck with your surgery! My date is Mar 18! I was very private at first about the upcoming surgery, but I have a big family and i don't hide much from them. I also give prayer requests to the prayer team at church, and i wanted prayers for success. My age might have something to do with it, I am 58, but I don't worry much about what other people think. I decided to write an honest post about the weight loss surgery on Facebook. I ended the post with, "I don't have room in my life for haters, but I do hope you will offer me support and prayers for success. I have had an overwhelming outpouring of support. I won't have everyone asking me how i lost weight, because they know. Several people told me they had WLS. Being open about surgery isn't for everyone. I totally respect your choices about whether or not to be open about it. I wish you much success in your journey!

I only told a select group of friends and family. Now that I am a week out I don't mind telling people I did it but I only shared with positive support people before the surgery.

My date is 3/25 and up to now I have only told my husband and kids. I have a mentor that had RNY 8 years ago and she knows. Well then my parents were in the house when I got a call from the center, so now they know. I don't want any others to know, I want to keep this private medical business. I have been working and have lost weight already, they know I work hard on it. When someone at work asks why I am gone for surgery or something, we just have been saying gall bladder out and some work due to that. Everyone knows that is a true fact for me, I have been battling my gall bladder for two years so that part is true and they are going to take out my gallbladder during the surgery and my bile ducts have stones also so cleaning on them. So I am not totally fibbing I am just choosing not to tell the whole thing. I really feel that I don't have to and should not have to let someone know my private health issues, so I have stuck to that decision and threatened my family to keep it zipped up on it. Good luck and I do not blame you at all, understand it all

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
