No problems...'til vitamins

Recommended Posts

I was sleeved Feb. 3rd. I was doing pretty well, getting in my fluids, and started feeling less weak after I was able to start adding food. And then it all changed when I added Vitamins. My doctor said not to add in vitamins until 2-3 weeks post-op, so I have only been taking them for just over a week now. I'm only taking exactly what my doc and nut suggested, and the vitamins are all made specifically for bariatric patients. But they make me incredibly nauseous. So nauseous that even drinking Water makes me feel like I might vomit and like my tummy is doing somersaults. I didn't really mean to, but cut back on my fluids so much as a result of this that I ended up at an urgent care clinic having to get 2 bags of IV fluids due to dehydration.

I know my body needs the vitamins, but they make me feel so crappy. It seems to help a little to take them with food, but I still feel nauseous. Has anybody else experienced this? I'm so frustrated because I had been doing so well!

@@Soready2lose I usually have to take mine with food ....especially folic acid and Iron. They Can make me feel deathly ill. I had to experiment around until I found some I could handle. I usually take the folic acid and iron before bed now.

Vitamin D is notorious for making people nauseous, and I take a lot of it for several reasons. I battle the nausea by taking Calcium with it, works great. Your multi Vitamin probably has D in it, so try taking you Vitamins on a sleeve that has food in it, it should help your nausea. Just don't take your Iron with the Calcium, wait a few hours between Iron and calcium. Good luck to you!

I feel your pain. I researched and picked out Vitamins pre-surgery. I even preached to those on BP who were taking children's vitamins telling them they weren't going to get the nutrients they needed. Then guess what? Life happened. I had surgery April 2014 and every Vitamin made me so sick. I even stopped taking them months 2-5. Thankfully my labs always came back normal but I knew long-term it would end up catching up to me. I now subscribe to the anything-is-better-than-nothing-theory. I found a vitamin that melts in your mouth that I LOVE! I actually look forward to taking them every night because they are that good! I take the Multivitamin, hair.skin.nails (biotin), energy (b12) and Vitamin D. I found these at Target but now I order them on Amazon online.

I found that the Bariatric Advantage Vitamins made myself (and several people in my support group) feel nauseous. So after taking with food as @@Elode said, you can also try different brands and see if your frankensleeve doesn't grumble quite so much.

What do the vita melts taste like?? I use the Bariatric Advantage and I take one in the morning with my Protein tea and one around 2:30 in the afternoon. They are quite large but I can get them down without any trouble. I don't know if I am going to buy another bottle of them or try something different? I am the worse when it comes to taking pills. I have to place the pill way back in my throat and just swallow. I can't stand having them in my mouth touching my tongue.

They don't taste like Vitamins at all. That's why I like them! They are tiny and melt in your mouth so you don't even have to chew them. The Biotin one tastes like strawberry lemonade (my personal favorite!), multivitamin tastes like tropical fruit, energy (b12) berry and Vitamin d is vanilla. I also ordered zinc which is honey. I have never been able to tolerate Vitamins. Even prenatal vitamins made me puke when I was pregnant. I am not exaggerating when I tell you I actually LOVE taking these as they don't taste like vitamins at all. No chalky Vitamin consistency like all the other endless chewables I tried.

My multivitamin is the only one that makes me nauseous. As others have said, taking it on a full stomach or before bed fixes the issue! I take my B12 and Calcium during the day and my multi before bed and have been fine since changing the time.

For me it is the multi-vit. They have always made me sick. I have to eat before I take it, and it still makes me nauseated. I HATE it. Dread taking it.

I was sleeved on 2/4. I've been taking Vitamins since 4 days post op. I take Centrum chewable, a costco chewable Vitamin C and a Vitamin B that dissolves under the tongue. Haven't had any issues

I also had trouble with Vitamins (even liquid and melts) and DID vomit them up. My Doc said not to worry about taking Vitamins for the 1st 4-6 weeks if I was having trouble with them. He also said I would NOT get Vitamin deficient in this time frame. Focus on healing first most and fluids. Avoid vomiting no matter what.

Ohhhh could I go on about Vitamin issues, my dear!

opurity was horrendous to my stomach. By day 4, I was throwing it up. The Flintstones chewables are awesome for most, but made me break out in hives. (I'm sensitive to dyes, so this didn't shock me too much, but it's a GREAT alternative multivitamin).

Celebrate made me gag and I threw up the Centrum complete chewables.

I'm finally down to splitting the Alive multivitamin pill in half and swallowing it that way. My stomach has been thanking me, quite honestly.

Let us know how the rest go!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
