vctlong 4 Posted March 7, 2015 For the past week or so I've been having uncomfortable yet bearable feelings in my throat and chest. At times in my throat I get the feeling like I've swallowed a whole piece of hard candy but I haven't eaten anything. And when I lay down and sometimes even when just sitting it feels like something "sizzling" and I'm not sure if that's the word I should use but something is going on in my chest moving up towards my throat. I have a lot of belching too. What's going on? Sleeved on 12/29 next surgeon appt Appt 4/

vctlong 4 Posted March 7, 2015 How do I go in and update my profile info? It won't let me do it from my iPhone unless I am doing it wrong. Let me try a desktop. What is a PPI?
Chele H 427 Posted March 7, 2015 A PPI is a proton pump inhibitor which stops your stomach from producing acid...like Nexium, Prilosec, etc. I was given one for 30 days post op and now I take Zantac which is an acid reducer. Reflux is a very common side effect of VSG. You can buy Nexium, Prevacid and Prilosec over the counter. I would definitley try it and call your surgeon. Hope you feel better. JamieLogical 8,713 Posted March 7, 2015 Reflux for sure. Go ahead and buy some Prilosec (generic omeprazole is fine) and start taking one a day. Then try to get an appointment with your surgeon or regular doctor.
BLERDgirl 6,417 Posted March 7, 2015 How do I go in and update my profile info? It won't let me do it from my iPhone unless I am doing it wrong. Let me try a desktop. What is a PPI? Editing your profile can only be done from desktop. As others have mentioned you likely need a PPI. Start with 20 mgs and if you don't feel relief in a week up that to 40mgs. The other thing is try to take it before the acid hits. I used to get that feeling in the late afternoon.early evenings. I started taking my PPI around 2 - 3pm. It takes a 3 - 4 days to get into your system so you should know within a week if the PPI is working.
CowgirlJane 14,260 Posted March 7, 2015 I too advise PPI but this lump in the throat business might be something else. My first 2 years post sleeve my surgeon surveyed me for issues. That hard to swallow and lump in throat was constantly asked and in a different section of survey than reflux so I think you need to see your bariatric team. I had the lump in the throat feeling before I increased my PPI to 40mg. At first I thought I was just too full and then I realized it was acid and that it often appeared around the same time each day. Once I increased my PPI I was fine. GEAUX SAINTS 143 Posted March 7, 2015 Sounds like you're drinking before your food has left your stomach. I know the feeling. It feels like there's a huge "something" sitting in your esophagus. You can hardly breath, you, certainly, can't talk and you start sweating!!! If this sounds familiar, wait to drink far a while longer! If I were you, I'd consult my surgeon, regardless!!! Good luck to you!!!
