Working on the pre-op diet

Recommended Posts

Long time lurker second post I think. Did all the prelim stuff Doc wants me to lose some weight before surgery to reduce liver. I am paying out of pocket ($13500.) if I have the surgery at my currrent weight it will tack on 6K to the price. So working hard to lose before the surgery. Hope to be banded soon though. Oh yeah started the Opti Fast diet on May 10, 07.

So, you've been on the liquid diet for almost a month now, right? How much would your Dr. like for you to lose (to where he wouldn't charge you the 6K extra?)

I think aside from saving the money...the most you can take off pre-surgery the better. Faster healing, easier surgery/anesthesia. It's a win/win situation for sure. It's hard to do, but stick to it--you're doing fantastic!!!

He wants my BMI down closer to 50 he said we would monitor how I do and make a decision in about a month or so. I have been following the diet closley, if I need to eat more than is on the diet I snack on celery or some other veggies. Hunger is a state of mind!

My hubby is a BigM50Guy...and waiting for insurance approval to get his band...he was denied the first time because his "BMI was too high", but it's in appeals now. I wish you the BEST of luck!!!!! Keep up posted.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
