6 months of check ins - how long until surgery?

Recommended Posts

I had my second appointment with bariatric center today. This was the appointment were they go over my insurance requirements. I have United Health Care and they require 6 months of check ins with the dietician and doctor before approval. The lady from the clinic who was going over my insurance told me that if at any point during this 6 months I fall below the BMI qualifications, insurance will immediately deny me. Is this true? I thought they just wanted to see that you were putting forth the effort for 6 months but would still approve you if your surgeon approves you. My BMI is .3 away from the qualifying number. This seems very trivial but I suppose that's how the insurance companies operate.

I am wondering how long it will take to get approval and schedule the surgery after the 6 months are up. Has anyone else experienced this 6 month wait period?

I did a 3 month supervised diet and I actually had to put on 5 lbs before my first weigh in in order to Have my BMI high enough. It's crazy I know! I also couldn't lose any weight in that 3 month supervised diet or else I wouldn't qualify either..again stupid I know! So I actually needed up putting on 8 Lbs and losing 3 of it at last weigh in. I was approved the first shot. Approval took about a week and after that I scheduled my surgery for 3 weeks after. I had to do A 2 week liquid diet first and I need a extra week for school. It really just depends on your surgeons schedule.

Oh and a disclaimer I don't have your insurance so I can only tell you my experience but if they are telling you you won't qualify if you lose weight I would LISTEN!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
