I wasn't allowed coffee until 30 days post op and then I had to make sure to mix it with a fair amount of cream to tone it down a bit.

I am not allowed coffee until week 6. At that point, I am allowed one 6 ounce cup per day. My doctor said that caffeine is a diuretic and, since we are already working so hard to stay hydrated, it is counterproductive.

Even the mayo Clinic says that caffeine does not cause dehydration and caffeinated fluids can contribute to your daily Fluid intake:

I was allowed coffee 2 weeks after surgery. No more than 2 cups a day. I have coffee for Breakfast with Protein Powder, fat free, sugar free flavored Creamer, and stevia.

I just had my final pre-op appt and my surgeon said it was okay to drink (he didnt even specify waiting although I think with the acid I will want to!)... which of course completely contradicted what the psych said just 3 days earlier.

I'm not worried about the diuretic effect (since I'm already drinking 2 cups a day... doesnt really seem to have an effect on me)... its more the acid that I'm concerned will disagree with my new sleeve

I'm allowed Decaf after one week

I asked my NUT this week and she said that I am not allowed any Decaf coffee until I am eating 1000 calories - don't think this will ever happen.

Every NUT and doc has their own set of guidelines. And every patient has different tolerances to food and drink. I was told to stay away from caffeine for the 1st month, as it can irritate the sleeve staple line.

When I did start drinking coffee again, I took it very slow. My 1st cup, I took a sip - about a teaspoon full, waited 5 minutes and took another teaspoon sized sip, waited 5 minutes. I know from experience that if I'm going to have a negative reaction to food or drink, it's going to happen in that 10 minute window.

Ha! I had to work pretty hard at it, but I'm finally up over 1000 calories most days now. I wanted to do more intense workouts and there was no way I was going to be able to pull that off without getting in more calories.

Thank you everyone for the input!!!! I think I'm going to hold off on drinking if for now and ask my doc when I see him next, just to be sure!!

My doc doesn't want his patients to have coffee for about 4-6 months. I told them up front I wouldn't comply with that rule, so they cleared me at 6 weeks. I had strict instructions to avoid my Iron and Calcium at the same time as coffee. Now I don't need calcium or iron, so I tend to drink 3-4 cups daily. Just finished one :)

I weaned myself off caffeine prior to surgery. Doctor didn't order it, I just did. Postop I drank a lot of Decaf herbal tea. Every time I tried coffee, my tummy would hurt and I would have to take Rolaids or maaloxx. Around 4-5 months I Was finally able to tolerate it in small quantities. Now I drink it like gang busters....at least 1 large travel mug (20oz) daily and sometimes 2 mugs. I never missed the caffeine so I just stuck with decaf. I've got a Keurig so there's dozens of decaf varieties to choose from. I still drink the decaf herbal teas, too...esp at bedtime, so there are some days 50+ oz of my fluids come from coffee and tea. I would be one wired chick if it wasn't decaf! But If I'm on the road and the only decent coffee available is caffeinated, I will drink it.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

      2. BlondePatriotInCDA

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
