Lap band and income tax

Recommended Posts

Hey all my Canadian banders...

So I was wondering if anyone knows if you can claim any part of your surgery on your income tax? I looked into this prior to having my surgery and was told by the Canadian Revenue Agency that lap band surgery is a form of cosmetic surgery so it cannot be claimed. I live in Ontario and I just wanted to know if anyone could offer me any further information about this. My surgery came with a hefty price tag and it would be nice to get something back. I thought it was worth a try:) Hope someone has some recommendations.

Don't know about Canada...but in the USA, anything you pay out of pocket for medical, can be figured in and determined based upon your total income.

I was told that we can remit and your likely looking at about 4k back. This is what my Canadian surgeon advised!

Angelant76 - Do you know what I would have to do for that or did you claim any of the amount you paid?

I just got banded in Jan of this year so I have to wait until next year. My accountant tells me you can submit it under medical expenses. I think you can claim a certain max amount, not sure of the specifics.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
