Looking for a MI Dr.

Recommended Posts

I have been speaking with Andrea at Great Lakes Weight Loss, formerly Michigan Obesity Surgey Specialists. It appears they no longer use BeLiteWeight.

I am hoping to work with Dr. Weiner in their self-pay program. My current surgeon wants over $21k here in Chicago and my insurance keeps denying claims for my pre-surgery testing, psych eval, nutrition consult. It has been several hundred dollars so far. I am fed up and just deciding to pay out of pocket. They offer a package for $10,700 currently.

I have never had surgery before and do not know what to expect from a teaching hospital. It appears that the surgeons from Great Lakes are all well-experienced. Dr. Weiner is a Lap-Band faculty member assisting in training new surgeons on the procedure.

Thank you to everyone on the feedback of surgeons and their staff at Harper.

I met Dr. Weiner, but Dr. Laker was my surgeon and he was wonderful, very caring and very knowledgable. We have similar personalities and he let me pick the music for the operating room, he's a huge Red Hot Chili Peppers fan, which is good because I am too! I really enjoyed the teaching hospital experience. It was kind of like Grey's Anatomy. Dr. Laker did the actual procedure with the student's observing and they came by to check on me or take blood pressure or just to keep me company. Everyone at Harper was wonderful and I felt really supported.

You have made me feel so much better about this experience. It sounds like I will be treated like a Rock Star by the staff!

I just had my surgery 4/29/11 by Dr. Weiner and I feel it was the best decision I have ever made! I was going to go to another Dr. and found out Dr. weiner who coincidently works with me, also did the surgery. I was very secure with him and his staff. They were very knowledgable and willing to answer all questions. It's been 3 weeks and 35lbs, so I can not complain. The surgery was real easy. I would truly recommend Dr. Weiner. Try going to a few seminars and support groups. Good luck !

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
