portuguesegal10 16 Posted March 4, 2015 I just started my journey and meet my surgeon next Tuesday (3/10) I know that I'm going to have a 6 month supervised diet for my insurance. My BMI is 43 and I'm so scared that if I lose too much weight or gain during those 6 months that insurance will not cover surgery! Has this happened to anyone or am I just freaking out for no reason? I just don't want anything to happen to prevent me from getting surgery!
mclorrie 219 Posted March 4, 2015 You might ask your surgeon. I heard that some insurance companies look at your starting weight rather than your weight before surgery. Good luck!
Wannabeskinnie 59 Posted March 4, 2015 I was at a bmi of just 35 but had high blood pressure, high cholesterol and severe arthritis, so I qualified based on that. My surgeon said it was ok to lose weight and get below the required bmi because insurance only takes into consideration your weight during the intake...double check with your dr but I believe you shouldn't have any worries
portuguesegal10 16 Posted March 4, 2015 Phew ok thanks so much! I'll definitely ask him on Tuesday just to be sure! I don't have any comorbidities so my BMI has to be over 40. Those diseases run in my family though and at the rate that I'm going I I know that I will eventually get them too but I don't want to just sit around and wait to get them! IMS1985 1 Posted March 4, 2015 I was going to do surgery about two years ago and backed out, but this is my first for the sleeve! I have never had any sort of surgery so I have that fear of the unknown! I am excited though. I hope I can have it done in the near future!
portuguesegal10 16 Posted March 5, 2015 Which surgery were you thinking of getting the first time? I've never had any kind of surgery either so it's a little nerve-wracking but mostly I'm just very anxious to get it done already! I'm so ready to hopefully start my new life with my new body! I can't wait! I wish I could get it done soon too but I know I have to wait at least 6 months for insurance. I'm going to ask him on Tuesday if there is any way to make it earlier but I doubt it
heav85 123 Posted March 5, 2015 My nutritionist told me to lose weight to show the insurance you're trying to lose but don't go below the required bmi or ull get knocked out.
portuguesegal10 16 Posted March 5, 2015 Oh boy ok thank you..I'm really nervous about that! What if you gain one month? Will they not cover it anymore?

IMS1985 1 Posted March 5, 2015 Sorry abt the late response! Crazy day! I was considering the lap band 2 years ago but I came to the conclusion it wasn't the right "choice" for me. I'm now planning on getting the sleeve. I've done tremendous research and it's the one I've determined is the right choice!
IMS1985 1 Posted March 5, 2015 Usually with insurance requirements you have to wait it out and that sucks! I'm excited too about starting my new life! I can't wait!!!
