Birth control and surgery

Recommended Posts

Hey yall! I'm in my pre op stages and was curious if any of you know about getting the surgery and taking birth control during your first 3 phases after surgery. I have endometriosis and take birth control to help the painful symptoms. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I will not be seeing my surgeon until probably around april.

I was on the pill, but they told me I had to stop the month before and 3 months out because of blood clots. I now use the ring Im not sure if it has the same stuff as the pill but that could be an option or IUD. But regardless its a 3 months out rule for birth control.

I was allowed to keep taking my pill right through the whole process. You should discuss it with your surgeon for sure. Post-op I also used back-up birth control methods, since I was on antibiotics and because I was a little worried about potential absorption issues where I might not be getting the full benefit of my pill.

I was allowed to stay on mine. I think I nagged some about it because I'd read you had to be off of it but it was fine. I've had no complications.

My last active pill was 2 weeks before surgery so I wasn't going to start a new pack so I stopped 2 weeks prior. He said to wait until 3 weeks post op to start taking again as the first 3 weeks are when you are most prone to blood clots

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
