Feeling defeated

Recommended Posts

Saw my surgeon yesterday. He says I am not losing quickly enough. I have to start calorie counting. When I qas done with surgery Nov. 25th I was 355. Down from 383 in June. Yesterday I weighed at 296. I thought about nineteen pounds a month was pretty good. Apparently not. This is the first time since I was a teenager that I weigh less than three hundred pounds. I guess I really am a gastric failure too.

If you're failing I'm missing something. Your body is going to need to adjust. If they want you to count, use MyFitnessPal. It might not be the calories but the ratio of Protein to carbs. Make sure you're getting your protein in. I think you're doing great. Don't lose heart. You can do this

Jeez, I don't even want to think what your surgeon would have to say about me only losing 6 pounds a month!

I don't understand doctors that tell patients they aren't losing enough. It does nothing for the self esteem. Some patients are slow but steady losers. You haven't gained so that's a big plus. YOU ARE NOT A FAILURE! Counting calories isn't that difficult. Did he give you a calorie guideline he wanted you to fall in? I use MyFitnessPal. My basic rules are 700 - 850 calories per day, Try to keep carbs under 50, Protein at least 70gm and get my 64 ounces of fluids in each day. I also try to keep my carbs to Breakfast or lunch because those are the hours of the day I am most active.

So take a deep breath, and get back to work. You can do this!

WTH. Does the surgeon get a bonus if you lose a certain amount if you reach your goal weight within 6 months? You are down 61 lbs in 3 months. That's pretty damned impressive, surgery or not. I'm not a doctor, but it doesn't seem reasonable or safe to push any harder than that. You're losing weight, that's what's important. With every pound you shed, your risk factors for a whole host of health problems decrease dramatically. Wellness is the goal here, not who can lose the most, the fastest. Maybe a second opinion would be something to consider here.

Sounds to me like you're doing great! Just keep making the right choices, and don't let that dumbass bring you down or harm your commitment. If you stick to this daily recipe.....

  • 70+ grams of Protein
  • 64+ ounces of Fluid
  • Green vegetables as fullness allows
  • Only protein-based Snacks
  • Completely avoid starches, sweets and booze
  • Walk 30+ minutes

.....the weight will fall off and the next time you see him, you can tell him he was fulla spit last time.

Good luck! You got this!!!!!

I feel that you must have misunderstood - you are a FAST loser compared to most women. Could it be that it is slowing down and he is trying to give you advice how to keep things going?

The reality is that it is easier to lose the first 6-12 months post op and for those of us that started higher BMI, we want to maximize our changes of getting to goal.

anyway, I think you are doing epically awesome! I went from 308 (BMI of about 51) and now maintaining a normal weight/single digit clothing sizes. So exciting!

I feel this might be the case. It's hard for me to imagine a doctor pushing to lose weight that fast. I don't think that's very responsible. If that truly is the doctor's opinion, maybe go see another doctor.

Thank you all so much. Before we went into surgery I told him my biggest fear was that it wouldn't work. I started dieting at age five. So many times I have tried but couldn't stick to it. The last couple of years my life has changed drastically. We adopted three special needs children from foster care. Found out the oldest was sexually abusing the younger ones before thay came to us. Had that child removed for the safety of the others. We have continued to advocate for that child because they have a traumatic brain injury and grew up being abused. It is all they ever knew. We have both been working to become healthier better parents. Up to now the surgeon has been very supportive. I don't know if he forgot I had an earlier appointment than expected. I fell flat on a cement floor and came in to have him check. He was checking my weight against my last visit I think. I'm not sure if he was measuring from last visit or actual surgery. Just a big let down because I was worried I would still be over 300. Thanks again for being so supportive during my pity party. You all are great inspirations.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
