LumpySpacePrincess 594 Posted March 3, 2015 There are a couple of products I'm looking at ordering from netrition. One is a honey alternative made from xylitol. I want to know if anyone has post-op experience with it? Maltitol, unless in very small doses, makes me dump so I wanted to hear from others about using xylitol based things instead. Thanks! Stevehud 1,790 Posted March 4, 2015 well sugar alcohols, i.e. malitol, xylitol, sorbitol, all have a natural laxative effect and as such i have found it does not take much to, umm get things flowing, if ya get my meaning. some of the funniest reading you can ever do is to look up the forums online for sugar-free Gummy bears. i guarantee you cannot help but laugh out loud at the stories. And by the way do not eat the sugar-free gummy bears...you have been warned.
gal friday 176 Posted March 4, 2015 Yup! I can have large amounts of sugar alcohols with no effect on my GI system. My dad, however, who has the band, has never tolerated sugar alcohols of any kind. It really varies from person to person. I would get a product and test it out, see how your body reacts, and then buy more xylitol based products.

You may be able to tolerate Stevia and Monk Fruit extract. Both are natural sweeteners, derived from plant sources. I use Monk fruit, made from the Asian lo han fruit (I think stevia has an after taste, but everyone I know loves it). You can use it in cooking and baking (it doesn't change the delicate chemical reactions that are at the heart of cooking and especially baking), it comes in big bags, single serve packets, and even little squeeze bottles of liquid that you can keep in your purse. It's pricier than other artificial sweeteners, but I think it's worth it.
