Worried about being able to take meds soon after surgery

Recommended Posts

I'm worried whether I'll be able to swallow my prescription medicines in the day and weeks following surgery. I take a couple of very tiny pills, a couple regular sized capsules, and three large pills every morning. Will I still be able to take these (swallow them) each morning? Any advice or tips would be appreciated.

That should read "in the days and weeks following surgery."

Here is the thing, if you are still required to take all of them ( I don't know what they are for) they will either find the liquid form of those prescriptions or they will have you crush them and take them with yogurt. ( not a fun experience by any means). The good news is, this is temporary. After your tummy heals you will be able to swallow some of them whole.

The other good news is, if some of these are used to treat your co morbitiies such as diabetes, cholesterol, high blood pressure, etc, you will likely stop taking some of them very soon.

I think the medication changes was one of the most positive non scale victories most of us have within a few weeks or days of surgery. I went from taking 8 differnt prescriptions every day to 1!

Good luck on your surgery and keep us posted on your progress.

After surgery, I was unable to swallow many of the Vitamins I was required to take. This lasted for about 2 months. I used a pill splitter and pill crusher. The same may work for some of your prescription drugs. After surgery, many of the prescription medicine I was taking to combat diabetes and high blood pressure, I found that I no longer needed because these conditions went into remission.

The surgeon will advise you on the medicine to take after surgery and should also help you in resolving this issue (inability to swallow).

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
